COVID-19 Vacancy Care Home Liaison Wellbeing Assistant Psychologists

We are one of the largest specialist mental health and learning disabilities trusts in the country, with an annual income of £320m and a workforce of some 6,700 staff operating from around 100 sites in Durham, Teesside, North Yorkshire and York and Selby. We provide a range inpatient and community services to 2m people living in County Durham, the Tees Valley, Scarborough, Whitby, Ryedale, Harrogate, Hambleton and Richmondshire. We also provide additional specialist services to other parts of Northern England.

We deliver our services by working in partnership with eight local authorities and clinical commissioning groups, a wide range of voluntary organisations, as well as service users, their carers and the public. The services are spread over a wide geographical area of around 3,600 square miles, which includes coastal, rural and industrial areas.

We are pleased to offer two Assistant Psychologist posts to work as part of our innovative and successful Care Home Wellbeing Service (CHWS).  These posts provide a unique opportunity to be part of a team providing vital psychological support to care home staff and residents who have been significantly and adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.  Since its formation in October 2020 it has provided support on an individual, group and whole-home basis to residents and staff members.  It has delivered a range of creative interventions and facilitated a number of whole-home projects. 

In recognition of its impact as a service it has received further fixed term funding through until the end of March 2022.

Applicants must ensure that prior to applying they have agreement from their current line manager that they can be released on a secondment basis.

In the event that permanent funding is secured for this post the successful applicant will be confirmed in post on a permanent basis.

 

The CHWS works alongside the Care Home Liaison (CHL) Team to support care homes across County Durham and Darlington. The role of the CHL team is to develop the use of non-pharmacological interventions for care home residents presenting with mental health problems or behaviour in dementia that challenges and to develop the knowledge and skills of care home staff to meet their residents’ needs.  The existing CHL team is focussed primarily on the wellbeing of residents, but in order for staff to meet their residents’ needs, they have to have their own needs met.  The CHWS has forged strong links locally and nationally in this field, collaborates with colleagues engaged in the provision of this support and has strong relationships with our TEWV Staff Wellbeing Hub.

A key element of the Assistant Psychologist role is to support the Counselling Psychologist in improving the wellbeing of care home residents and staff and support recovery from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.  The Wellbeing Team work pro-actively to engage with and screen care home residents and staff for Covid-19 related distress, work with Care Homes to plan and deliver bespoke wellbeing interventions for individuals or groups appropriate to the recovery phase of the pandemic, deliver Psychological First Aid (PFA and produce multi-media resources promoting wellbeing.  Assistant Psychologists represent the CHWS at multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings taking responsibility for appropriate information sharing. When working with care home residents the team also complete direct and indirect assessments involving residents, families and care home staff; support formulation meetings with members of the MDT to understand the person’s needs; and promote the use of non-pharmacological interventions to meet the person’s needs and reduce their distress. The post holders will also be expected to gather data to evaluate the impact of the post and team.

A degree in Psychology is essential and the post holder must be eligible for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society. You will demonstrate empathy towards our client group and to care home staff and have the capacity to maintain a compassionate approach even in stressful situations.  Experience of psychological wellbeing interventions or psychological therapy with any client group would be beneficial as would the experience of working with older people. Experience of working in care settings or within an MDT would also be desirable.

The post holder will be required to work across a varied urban and rural area in County Durham and Darlington and the ability to independently fulfil this travel requirement is essential.  The base of work can be flexible within the geographical area covered and there may be some flexibility to work from home for some of the time.  

You will be well supported with regular supervision from the  Counselling Psychologist and have access to Continuing Personal Development (CPD) within the specialty and within the MDT. You will demonstrate how you use these structures to maintain safe practice for yourself and others. We provide excellent opportunities for peer support/supervision, CPD, and teaching/training.  There are also strong links to the local Teesside D Clin Psy Programme as we are key providers of academic and clinical experience components both in terms of teaching and supervision.
