Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a self-motivated, enthusiastic, suitably experienced and qualified Biomedical Scientist to join the Virology service based at the RSCH site, Brighton, as part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust Pathology services. With the Hospital located only a stone’s throw away from the beach front and a 5 minute drive from the South Downs, this is a fantastic opportunity to join our young, diverse team in the vibrant and inclusive city of Brighton.
We invite applications for the permanent virology role of Biomedical Scientist from HCPC registered Biomedical scientists. Applicants must have significant experience of working in a routine NHS diagnostic Virology Laboratory. Those with NHS Diagnostic Microbiology laboratory experience may also be considered depending on experience stated.
The Brighton Laboratory holds UKAS accreditation and has established links with the BSMS medical School. We can offer excellent training and development opportunities, including an IBMS Specialist Portfolio within Virology.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist to join the Virology team based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. The post holder will be responsible for carrying out analytical work and will rotate through all sections of the Virology department.
The successful candidate MUST hold an IBMS accredited degree and an IBMS certificate of competence and be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.
The role is full time (37.5 hrs per week), including late night, weekend and bank holiday working. The post holder will be expected to participate in all shift patterns. Applications for full time, job share or flexible working requests will be considered.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
A full range of clinical Virology services including virus serology and an extensive range of molecular tests are provided by the Brighton laboratory making it an exciting and innovative place to work.
The base for the successful candidate is Brighton, but they may be required to attend any Trust site, including the virology section at St. Richards Hospital in Chichester.
The post holder will act as a registered Biomedical Scientist, in all sections of Virology, who scientifically analyses clinical specimens, interprets the results and generates reports to aid the clinicians in the diagnosis of and progression of disease as well as monitoring treatment effectiveness.
As a Biomedical Scientist the post holder will undertake a range of complex investigations to assist in the diagnosis of disease, and monitoring of treatment. These investigations include manual, semi-automated and automated techniques on specialised analytical equipment including both serology and molecular techniques.

- IBMS Certificate of competence
- HCPC registration
- NHS Clinical Lab Experience - minimum 18months or 1000hrs
Desirable criteria
- NHS Diagnostic Virology lab experience
