ACCOUNTABLE TO: Designated Individual (DI), Head of Nursing & Quality
Main duties of the job
JOB SUMMARY
To provide a specialist safe, secure, effective and comprehensive mortuary and post mortem service for the needs of Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, Pathologists, Coroner and the Community.
The post holder will be required to manage the day to day support and supervision of both the APT and Trainee APT. The post holder will be required to hold both the Certificate and the Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology; work unsupervised and
performs a broad range of duties. The post holder will provide an expert level of theoretical and practical knowledge and experience.
The post holder will provide practical assistance to the Pathologist whilst in attendance and ensure that safe practices and Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to in every aspect of the department’s work. They will ensure the efficient day-to-day running of the department, directing staff and allocating duties; being responsible for essential user maintenance and excellent standards of cleanliness and sterilisation of mortuary equipment as required. The post holder will ensure that appropriate techniques are applied by staff when assisting in post mortem examinations and identify potential hazards to health and take measures to eliminate or minimise risks in the Mortuary.
They will demonstrate and apply knowledge of the laws and codes of practice relating to the Mortuary and all aspects of its function including those in relation to deceased and ensure that all staff adhere to these. They will supervise all visitors to the department and deal sympathetically with grieving relatives. Train, manage and develop junior personnel and promote excellence and respect in the management of deceased when liaising with Funeral Directors, Porters and other agencies.
The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring that full implementation of licencing and regulatory requirements are met.

The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
