Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity  to join our Senior Speech and Language Therapist and SLT apprentice, supporting adults with a learning disability. The post is based at Heath Close in Billericay working with patients in their own home, preventing admissions into assessment and treatment units. The post holder will also be supporting the team offering an SLT provision into the assessment and treatment unit for those patients that require inpatient care- with the aim of supporting discharge back to their community provision . A care driver is essential as the role will require traveling to patients home and day opportunities covering Southend, Basildon, Brentwood, Wickford and Thurrock.

You will be working alongside Nursing and Occupational Therapy colleagues during your shifts, as well as Consultant Psychiatry. 

The team operates between 8am-8pm Monday and Friday and 9-5 Saturday, Sunday and Bank holidays (on a rotational basis).  You will be given a shift pattern at least 12  weeks in advance.

 

Main duties of the job

  • To assess, develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy Treatments to Adults with Learning Disabilities.

 

  • To be involved in the development and implementation of Inclusive Communication within South Essex.

 

  • To contribute Speech and Language Therapy advice to positive behaviour management plans in the community

.

  • To be an active member of the Team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To write reports reflecting knowledge of communication difficulties.

 

  • To provide appropriate intervention and evaluation of outcomes.

 

  • To provide professional advice to others regarding the management and care of patients/clients with communication difficulties.

 

  • To demonstrate effective negotiation skills particularly in relation to case management issues with carers, service users and others involved.

 

  • To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and outcome measures. 

 

  • To undertake joint assessments with other Speech and Language Therapist’s and/or other professionals within this specialist area of ALD.

Education

Essential criteria
  • Bachelors degree in Speech and Language Therapy recognised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Working with Adults with Learning Disabilities
Desirable criteria
  • Current approaches to working with learning disability service users
  • Knowledge of Inclusive Communication
  • Knowledge of approaches to working with people with autistic spectrum disorder

Skills/Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good oral communication skills based on fluency on the English language
  • Literate in IT/Computer Skills
Desirable criteria
  • Makaton or signing skills
  • Experience of working with Multi-disciplinary teams
