Job overview
We are recruiting for a motivated hard working band 6 Registered Nurse to join a dynamic Cath lab team, within a busy 10 bedded elective cardiac procedures unit. We work closely with the Cardiac Centre and perform procedures on outpatients and inpatients including Diagnostic Cardiac Angiography, Permanent Pacemaker insertion, Loop Recorder insertion, Direct Current Cardioversions, Trans-oesophageal echocardiograms and Stress Echocardiograms.
Main duties of the job
- Support the ward manager in the provision, co-ordination, management and development of an effective, high quality service in line with government targets
- Act as a competent scrub and runner nurse and be able to manage the recovery of patients following all cardiac procedures demonstrating good airway management skills.
- Ensure the effective running of cardiology clinics and pre-assessment clinics
- Demonstrate good knowledge, experience and confidence in all cardiac procedures
- To provide care whilst adhering to trust protocols and guidelines
- To be able to perform and accurately interpret ECG’s and act upon the results
- To be able to administer by protocol thrombolysis or primary PCI protocols
- Ensure that the development of Mid Essex Hospitals Cardiology Service remains in line with the Governments National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease
- Willingness to attain and continue to maintain Advance Life Support Certificate with appropriately timed updates.
- Willingness to attend the Essex Cardio-Thoracic Centre in Basildon to undertake PCI training and keep up-to-date

- Communication
- Ensure patients and their relatives are aware of their treatment plans and any tests or investigations that they may require pre or post procedure in both pre-assessment clinics and prior to discharge.
- Act as the patients advocate and re-assure patients during all cardiac procedures.
- Ensure information is communicated effectively with consultants, cardiac liaison and other members of the MDT to ensure a smooth pathway of care for patients from admission through to discharge.
- Communicate effectively with waiting lists in conjunction with the senior sister to ensure adequate utilisation of lists
- Analytical and Planning
- Ensure all paperwork is completed accurately and clearly in the patient’s integrated care pathway.
- Work closely with the unit manager to ensure all patients receive the correct protocol and pathway of care.
- Ensure electronic tracking of case notes is completed on Lorenzo and patients are admitted and discharged in a timely manner.
- Interpreting blood results and any investigations required on assessment of patient pre or post procedure following protocols and liaising with the cardiology consultant where appropriate
- Clinical Duties
- Rotate between cardiac clinics, pre-assessment clinics, Cath lab and Recovery
- Assist Cardiac Physiologists with the Stress Echocardiography service
- Work to deliver a high standard of care and provide prompt patient care in emergency situations whilst supporting junior staff
- To take responsibility of the unit in the absence of the ward manager
- Policy and Service Development
- Adhere to unit protocols and trust policies
- Work with the senior sister to evaluate and update service provision and contribute to change
- Maintain best practice ensuring compliance with evidence based practice and participate and support research trials, clinical audit and practice development
- Contribute to the Cardiac Cath lab audit to measure performance against National Service Frameworks targets for Cardiology

- Complete Essex cardiac competencies for cardiac Cath lab and demonstrate both practical and theoretical learning
