COVID-19 Vacancy Associate Practitioner

Band 4

This is a 12 month fixed term contract. Please note this contract is based on workload associated with current Covid testing. If this workload significantly falls this contract maybe terminated before the 12 month period with reasonable notice

The Pathology service at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) is looking to appoint a Associate Practitioner in Microbiology to work in our molecular section for Covid testing. This role offers the ideal candidate the opportunity to be actively involved in the Microbiology service based on our Basingstoke site, which also provides services to our Winchester site and surrounding GP practices.

Since March 2020 the department has been heavily involved with the response to the Covid 19 pandemic. The laboratory has historically been very innovative, with heavy involvement in new technologies and  techniques. It was the first laboratory to implement the routine use of the Accelerate Pheno system for identifying and determining antibiotic susceptibilities on blood culture isolates.  The laboratory has also been at the forefront of Covid testing being the first to implement novel LAMP technology for the detection of the virus involved.

The Microbiology department is fully UKAS accredited and is an IBMS accredited training laboratory. The annual workload is over 500,000 requests and provides a comprehensive diagnostic service including, Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Infectious Disease Serology and Molecular testing. The department is fully computerised using a Winpath LIMS system, Q-Pulse quality management system and a well-established and supported electronic requesting system for hospital patients and General Practice.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in Biomedical Sciences or Molecular Biology with good knowledge of laboratory diagnostics.

We offer an opportunity to work with like-minded clinical and scientific team members in a forward-thinking Pathology service that supports and encourages individual professional development.
