Job overview

We are looking to recruit a band 3 Senior HCA at each Urgent Treatment centre, Folkestone and Deal.

The post would interest a current HCA Band 3 within the unit with proven skills who can work within a multi disciplinary team to deliver a high standard of care within existing standards and guidelines. You will need to be able to make decisions based on excellent clinical skills enabling safe passage of patients through the Urgent Treatment Centre. You must have initiative and work within your scope supporting all the Nurse Practitioners within the unit but also mentor and support the other band 3 on each site. 

Ideally applicants should have worked as an HCA at band 3 within the health field. It is however not essential. They must be prepared to continue to develop into the role to promote excellent care for all our patients. Mandatory training dates are set yearly for all staff to attend and these must be kept up to date.

The service opening times are 08.00 – 20.00 hours Daily

Main duties of the job

Independently bring patients into the unit and inform the Nurse Practitioners of any concerns:

  • Complete simple dressings
  • Wound closure and other treatments
  • Eye wash outs
  • Observe the waiting area
  • Observations and keep the unit stocked
  • Working closely with all the Senior staff

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Level 3. This could be an NVQ Level 3 apprenticeship, BTEC or equivalent international qualification in healthcare, or you will be able to demonstrate the equivalent level of experience.
  • You may also have the Care Certificate, but if not, we will support you to achieve this within the first 3 months of starting.
  • You’ll need to have recent experience of healthcare/working as a health care assistant gained through education, work experience or previous employment.
  • In addition you will also have Functional Skills at Level 2 (Literacy and numeracy/ GCSE grade A-C/ 4-9 or equivalent in English and Maths)

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • You’ll need have sound communication skills in order to understand and communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • You will need to be able to remain professional, work well under pressure and organise your own work in order to prioritise care delivery in line with trust policies and procedures
  • You will need to be able to be able to use IT systems and databases.
  • Work together with colleagues and other teams across the Trust.
  • You will need to have a customer focussed approach which is essential to; Provide patients, clients and their families with the best possible experience, represent the Trust when talking to and working with patients, colleagues and visitors.
Desirable criteria
  • You will have the skill to focus on the details with the ability to spot problems. You will know when you are within your own limits and when to escalate.
  • Having an awareness of developments within the NHS would be an advantage.
  • You will have knowledge of up to date clinical practice by using up- to- date skills and adhering to evidence-based procedures and clinical effectiveness frameworks. You will fully understand the role and remit of a health care worker.
  • You will need to have hand and eye coordination to use your clinical skills.
  • You’ll need to be adaptable in work as things change throughout the course of the day and to support the wider team.

Working Environment

Essential criteria
  • The role is physically demanding and can include standing for long periods of time. You will move and handle patients, using different pieces equipment and other physical health care tasks.
  • We encourage a culture where colleagues can be open and transparent about their own practice, team working to create a culture of continuous improvement and sharing good practice in order to improve care.
  • You will need to have the ability to travel across the organisation’s geographical patch in a timely manner.
  • Tact and sensitivity will be essential in this role. There will be times when you see distressing and emotional situations within your area. You may also be exposed to vulnerable, violent or aggressive patients.
  • Due to the nature of the role, you will have frequent exposure to fluids from the body, unpleasant odours and clinical waste.
