Job overview

•    To provide and maintain a flexible, dedicated and comprehensive painting and decoration service to all departments across a varied Estate.  This will be a planned (but flexible) approach, covering over 5000 rooms.
•    Ensuring a clean and safe working environment through the delivery of a quality service with minimal disruption to day to day clinical provisions.
•    Maintain a patient focused service across clinical and non-clinical areas.  This varies from admin offices to patient ward areas.

•    Maintain a patient focused service across clinical and non-clinical areas.  This varies from admin offices to patient ward areas.
•    Undertake minor reactive decoration work as required as part of a wider Estates Delivery Team.  
•    The Painter Decorator will have a first rate knowledge of all aspects of decoration. Particularly; paper hanging, painting and paint systems. 
•    To put our patients and clinical provision first, communicating with colleagues each day.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE:
•    To provide and maintain a flexible, dedicated and comprehensive painting and decoration service to all departments across a varied Estate.  This will be a planned (but flexible) approach, covering over 5000 rooms.
•    Ensuring a clean and safe working environment through the delivery of a quality service with minimal disruption to day to day clinical provisions.
•    Maintain a patient focused service across clinical and non-clinical areas.  This varies from admin offices to patient ward areas.

KEY RESULT AREAS
•    Clearly communicate face to face with clinical colleagues and service users on a daily basis, to ensure works are completed in a safe and planned way, whilst understanding patients needs first.
•    Forward plan allocation of tasks and materials on a weekly basis to ensure planned delivery is met, minimising disruption to clinical services.
•    Keep work areas clean, safe and secure in a live working environment.  Adhering to Trust Safety Policies and ensure compliance with trust policies in terms of COSHH, transport and storage of materials.
•    Represent the wider Estates and Facilities Team at all times in a professional manner, being able to receive and action feedback.
•    Ensure great housekeeping at all times, minimising access to tools, materials and exposure to dust and unpleasant odours.

RESPONSIBILITY:
•    Be able to prepare work areas and carry out first class workmanship, with minimal disruption to clinical teams and services.
•    Keeping your workspace tidy and secure, including access to tools, materials (incl. COSHH) and access equipment.
•    Have the ability to complete dynamic risk assessments of the environment.
•    Have the ability and understanding to travel across the Kent and Medway area.
•    Have capacity to work at heights and from ladders, also in confined spaces and live patient environments.
•    Be able to recognise minor building defects, which would impede the paint programme and bring them to the attention of the Estates Manager.
•    Be willing to undertake new or unfamiliar types of decorative finishes.  Attending training to support that development of both products and methods.
•    Have the ability to quantify the amounts of materials required for the areas given - when required to do so.
•    Be able to fit ceramic wall tiles, carpet tiles, curtain tracks and blinds. 
•    Decoration of all elements of:- New and existing buildings, items of machinery and furniture, signs and posts, lamp posts, fencing, wooden garden features and outbuildings.
•    To ensure waste is disposed of in accordance with the Trust waste disposal policy, assuring Health and Safety standards are adhered to.
•    Removal of rubbish to designated collection points.
•    To complete regular security checks of designated areas, ensuring windows are locked, lights switched off and rooms locked. Reporting any issues to local Estates Manager.
•    To wear the uniform provided, and ensure that it is kept clean and presentable at all times and wear the staff name badge provided by the Trust at all times when on duty.
•    To represent the wider Estates and Facilities Team at all times aligned to our Trust Values and Behaviours.
•    To take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by your actions, and to carry out your responsibilities in ways that ensure a safe and healthy place of work.
•    In the course of work you are to bring to the attention of your Supervisor or Manager:
1.    Any situation which reasonable could be considered to represent a serious or immediate danger to the health and safety of any person.
2.    Any matter which reasonable could be considered to represent a shortcoming in the Trusts health and safety protection arrangements.
•    Attend training sessions not necessarily held at your place of work and at times not rostered to work.
•    To undertake other duties at the discretion of your Supervisor or Manager.

ENVIRONMENT:
KMPT is a Mental Health Trust that spans Kent and Medway consisting of ward space which include Acute, Forensic and a Mother and Baby Unit, various administration buildings which consist of offices, community based clinics and training venues. 
We put patient care at the centre of our decision making and planning and therefore need to be mindful and flexible to accommodate last minute patient or clinical team needs.
Working Environment.  Due to  working in live patient environments, you may be exposed to distressing or emotional circumstances on an occasional basis.  This could include both verbal and physical intimidation. 

KNOWLEDGE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:   
•    Previous decorating or tradesperson, NVQ level 3 or above or demonstratable equivalent
•    Knowledge of a tradesperson basic duties acquired accredited training courses
•    Previous painting and decorating experience, minimal 3 years.
•    Previous handyman experience essential.
•    Able to work as part of a team essential.
•    To be a team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills enabling affective partnership working at all levels.
•    Full clean Driving Licence essential.
•    Previous NHS experience.
•    Deal appropriately with patients, staff and general public.
•    Ability to work without direct supervision.
•    Flexible approach to duties.

COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Painting and Decorating team will work closely with Estates Managers,  Facilities Manager and Ward Managers.  You will be expected to communicate effectively with all of the departments, clinical teams, wards and service users when you come into contact with them.

STANDARDS OF BUSINESS CONDUCT:
The post holder will be required to comply with the Trust’s Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions and at all times, deal honestly with the Trust, with colleagues and all those who have dealings with the Trust including patients, relatives and suppliers.

HEALTH AND SAFETY:
The post holder will be required to observe local Health and Safety arrangements and take reasonable care of him/herself and persons that may be affected by his/her work.
SAFEGUARDING:
All staff have a duty to identify, report and record incidents of potential or actual abuse. This statement applies whether the victim is an adult or child. All queries will be addressed by the Trust Safeguarding Team.
PERFORMANCE REVIEW:
This job description will be used as a basis for individual performance review between the post holder and the Manager.
The job description covers only the key result areas, and as such does not intend to provide a comprehensive list of objectives.  Specific objectives will be reviewed each April, and may develop to meet the changing needs of the service.
The post holder will need to take due account, in the way they achieve the key result areas of Trust policies and procedures.
