Job overview

Would you like to be part of a service that is embracing the therapeutic day? Are you someone who has a passion for working with adults with acute mental illness? Do you want to develop your knowledge, skills and expertise to ensure that we deliver high quality, person centred care at the right time and in the right place? 

We have a vacancy at Thanet Mental Health Unit, for a Senior physical health nurse ( RGN).  You will work collaboratively with the ward management team  alongside clinical staff to support delivery of effective, high quality and safe patient centred physical healthcare.

You will support the development and drive forward a physical health education programme to ensure that our staff are able to meet the physical health needs of our patients. You will also help ensure that physical health is viewed on par with mental health needs. 

Main duties of the job

  • Have a strong desire to support us to develop this service in a rapidly changing climate. 
  • Have an interest in supporting the physical health of people with acute mental illness having previous experience in this setting. 
  • Be willing to work in a challenging/often demanding driven environment. 
  • Be willing to engage in audit and evaluation. 
  • Be part of a team wishing to always improve the user experience of mental health services.
  • Be able to  support the management team in a leadership role.
  • Offer up-to-date training in physical health for all ward staff.
  • Liaise and build a working relationship within our local acute Trust hospitals

Qualification and Previous experience

Essential criteria
  • Nurse and NMC registration
  • Experience within acute mental Health services.

Knowledge and Skill

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate knowledge to post-graduate level of evidence based practice in caring for patients in the designated field
  • A robust understanding and ability to apply principles of risk assessment and risk management
  • Understanding of the impact of acute episode of mental illness on function and occupation of clients, families and carers
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant legislative frameworks and policies relating to care e.g. Mental Capacity Act, safeguarding, consent to treatment
  • Communication Skills: Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, cares/ families and all members of the multidisciplinary team
