Main duties of the job 

This is a permanent vacancy for 2  x 20hrs posts.  

We are looking for a handyman/store person to undertake minor maintenance tasks, co-ordinating the delivery of goods for services and managing stock control within Medway Community Healthcare at various sites. 

Your role will be supporting the estates function in various tasks, you will need to liaise with contractors, monitoring the utilisation of sites and providing support to the Reception team with postal runs when required. 

You will need a full driving licence and basic IT skills with the ability to work on various systems. 

 

Main duties of the job

To undertake minor maintenance tasks, coordinate car parking, building opening and closing, co-ordinating and oversee the delivery and storage of goods for services, clearing and cleaning sites, and gardening within Medway Community Healthcare at various sites, supporting the estates function in various tasks, liaising with contractors, monitoring the utilisation of sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Communication and relationship skills

 

Exchange routine information with colleagues, external contacts. Work closely with the Estates/Facilities Managers and Estates team to ensure requirements are understood and met. Communicate with receptionists, cleaners and service managers if any issues arise and inform the Facilities Manager as appropriate. Support service managers/team leaders, administrative teams, contractors and suppliers as well as all other MCH staff.

 

2. Knowledge, training and experience

 

Work with minimum supervision as a member of the estates team, including undertaking minor maintenance tasks as required and skill set allows. Maintain high standards of quality working practice, tidiness and health and safety. To understand general Handyman duties, cleaning/ clearing of rubbish and security.

 

 

3. Analytical and judgement skills

 

Fault finding of equipment, ensure all deliveries can be made safe and are stored appropriately to assist with the efficient ordering of items.

Control the use of car parking facilities on the Gillingham business park, help to maximise usage by implementing effective management processes.

 

4. Planning and organisational skills

 

Plans own work. Planning the most efficient process of loading, unloading and packing of regular deliveries to various sites. Organise stores to make maximum use of space. Develop and follow a tracking and monitoring system for equipment care and expiry dates. Ensuring MCH supplies at all sites are maintained and stored correctly.

 

5. Physical skills

 

Be able to use hand tools, drive and deliver stock and equipment to various sites. Be able to load and unload deliveries including equipment cages and boxes. Lift equipment to overcome obstacles and to take up/ downstairs or in lifts. Lift and move equipment on and off shelves in the stockrooms and for cleaning/ maintenance. Be able to assemble/ disassemble equipment in confined spaces.

 

6. Responsibility for patient / client care

 

Incidental contact with patients/clients at various sites.

 

7. Responsibility for policy and service development implementation

 

To follow all service policies and procedures giving feedback. Is proactive in suggesting changes to improve service provision, which may include commenting on maintenance policies. The collection of various equipment for all services such as WEEE, chemical, waste collections and arranging the disposal of these according to current legislation.

 

8. Responsibilities for financial and physical resources

 

Minimising costs through effective ordering. Keep the service’s running costs as low as possible by efficient reduction of wasted stock and equipment. Ensuring all equipment is treated with care and respect, during delivery, collection and storage. Requisition spare parts/ maintenance of equipment. Repair and maintain equipment to good working order to limit the need to replace. Be able to review current ordering and stock control processes and decide best delivery order, approximate timescales and if there is scope for any ad hoc requests to be completed. Play a part in stock control by being aware of item movement trends and building plans with the estate. Tag relevant equipment as part of the asset management process.

Assist with the maintaining of estate utilisation and the production of quarterly reports.

 

9. Responsibilities for human resources (HR)

 

Compile own timesheets and work records. Follow all HR procedures and policies.

 

10. Responsibilities for information resources

 

Follow all information governance procedures and maintain records to build an audit trail.

 

 

11. Responsibilities for research and development (R&D)

 

Provide relevant information for R&D projects as requested. Participate in surveys or audits. Escort internal/external agency colleagues around sites.

 

12. Freedom to act

 

Carry out and plan duties independently without routine supervision. Ensure maintenance requests for all sites are carried out to a high standard and in a timely manner, in accordance work schedules provided. Ensure issues are escalated appropriately when encountered.

Operate electrical and mechanical systems, take measurements. Lift waste, stack waste, push trailers/hitch trailers off van; lift manhole covers and valves, lift and relocate deliveries. Pack supplies into storerooms at various sites.

Interruptions can come from team members and other staff and contractors by telephone or in person.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE/NVQ or equivalent in Maths and English
  • Full Driving Licence
  • Good verbal and written communication
