An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Corporate Nursing and Integrated Governance Unit for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Legal Support Officer.

You will require commitment, passion and motivation in assisting the Head of Legal Services. You will need vision and excellent organisational skills. To succeed in the role you will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to enable you to work with varying levels of managers, clinicians and administrative colleagues. You will need to be able to demonstrate excellent time management skills as you will need to balance the demands of a very busy workload.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Preparation of Coroner's Investigations and Compensation Claims

  • Compilation, bundling and redaction of records.
  • Support with document management.
  • Arrangement of meetings on behalf of Team Members.
  • Witness Tracking.

General:

  • Admin support across the Legal Team.
  • Respond to internal and external enquiries, either written, email, face to face or telephone using empathy and judgement and taking appropriate action including giving (or withholding) potentially complex and sensitive data as appropriate.
  • Maintaining confidentiality at all times and making file notes for legal purposes.
  • Work confidently with a variety of information management systems and computer software packages.
  • Send and receive sensitive information within and outside the Trust securely and without delay, using relevant protection and encryption systems.
  • To assist the Integrated Legal Team with a wide range of legal enquiries and reports, prioritising and escalating to the Claims and Legal Services Manager, as appropriate.
  • To provide cover and support across the Legal Team
  • Support improvements and initiatives within the Legal Team.
  • Work within the procedural guidelines.
  • Ensure deadlines are met and take appropriate action to make sure that work is completed to given timescales.
  • To participate in the Trust's supervision and appraisal system.
  • Ensure attendance at training as appropriate to the needs of the role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support in the delivery of the variety of services provided by the Integrated Legal Team, particularly Inquest and Claims management but also other legal work, including Court of Protection, as well as Mental Health Act compliance work. To work closely with members of the Integrated Legal Team to assist with the day-to-day administrative processes involved in managing and progressing Inquests, Claims, and other Legal matters

Qualifications/Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of secondary education, including Maths and English at GCSE level at Grade C or above.
  • Experience of legal processes
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Experience of legal processes within the NHS or similar setting
  • Understanding of medical and legal terminology
  • Experience of reviewing documents to a high standard with good accuracy.
  • Proven experience of a range of secretarial and administrative procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Legal related qualifications eg: legal diploma or degree
  • Experience of maintaining office systems

Essential criteria
  • Dealing with difficult and sensitive information
  • Strong written communications skills - able to process information logically, clearly and concisely
  • Awareness of the importance of confidentiality - ability to work within appropriate boundaries.
  • Ability to use good judgement skills when dealing with enquiries and problems
  • Ability to plan workload, manage diaries, organise appointments, planning workload associated with key meeting dates
  • Ability to work alone but with awareness of own strengths and weaknesses, with a recognition of when to seek advice
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and deal with conflicting demands
