Senior Clinical Fellow in Vascular

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

At East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care.  We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 9,500 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work.

Job overview

The post holder will assist in providing a clinical service in elective and Vascular Surgery to the population of East Lancashire and the adjoining areas. This will include undertaking outpatient clinics, daytime operating lists and out of hour’s emergency operating lists under the supervision of Consultants.

The unit has a strong reputation for high quality surgical training and our Centre current workload is ideally suited for vascular surgeons who wish to improve their knowledge and technical skills in all aspect of vascular surgery.

There are plans that the vascular service in ELHT would move to LTH in future. Out patient services and day case would be delivered in ELHT while in patient work would take place at LTH.

Main duties of the job

The Directorate of Vascular Surgery provides inpatient, emergency and day case surgery to the catchment population. The vascular Unit is extremely well organised and has the following facilities:

  • A dedicated 18 bed vascular ward (B20)
  • A Vascular laboratory which support out-patient clinics and duplex scanning AM and PM Monday to Friday for one stop assessment of new referrals
  • A dedicated angiography room across the corridor from the vascular theatre, providing access to endovascular operations including EVARs and hybrid lower limb revascularisations.

All arterial surgery is performed at the RBH, supported by a 20 bedded Critical Care Unit run by specialist Intensivists, a 4 bedded Post-Operative Care Unit, and a full range of diagnostic and interventional radiology services. Planned day case varicose veins procedures are predominantly performed place in the Day-care unit at BGH.

The operating schedule is efficiently structured in keeping with modern tertiary vascular unit principles. There are 5 full-day (2 sessions each) vascular elective lists weekly. In additional, there are 3 vascular lists (1 session each) on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, ring-fenced for acute cases such as bypass grafts, carotid endarterectomies and hybrid procedures. In keeping with recently published GIRFT report, the ratio between scheduled and unscheduled arterial operations may change and theatre allocation may expand further.

Working for our organisation

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) was formed in 2003 from the merger of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust and the Burnley Hospitals NHS Trust.  ELHT provides Safe, Personal and Effective care to a population of more than 500,000.

Secondary care services are provided from two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital (RBH) and Burnley General Teaching Hospital (BGH).

In 2006 a service reconfiguration, ‘meeting patients needs’ was implemented which resulted in the Blackburn site becoming the centre for all acute services, and the only Emergency Department (ED), in East Lancashire.  Since 2012, RBH  has become a Trauma Unit in the Lancashire Trauma network alongside the trauma centre at the Royal Preston Hospital.

In 2012 the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital was designated as one of the Lancashire Vascular Centres. The Trust is also a tertiary referral centre for hepatopancreatobiliary surgery.

There are plans that the vascular service in ELHT would move to LTH in future. Out patient services and day case would be delivered in ELHT while in patient work would take place at LTH.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder is expected to attend a minimum of three theatre sessions per week and one or two out-patient clinics per week. The out of hour on call vascular cover will be provided by the successful candidate as a non-resident 1:6 rota. This is a separate rota from general surgery.

Vascular Surgeons have also access to a weekly interventional radiology list. This will be the perfect opportunity for vascular trainees to expand their endovascular experience.

As part of the role you will have assigned clinical education, admin & SPA time.

The post holder will share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate and will observe and comply with clinical and non-clinical policies and procedures (including local and national employment and personnel policies) agreed with employees and management. The post holder will be closely involved in clinical audit and other clinical governance issues.
