Clinical Research Fellow in Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction

Job overview

Clinical Research Fellow in Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction

This is a fixed-term position of up to 4 years to undertake a fully funded, approved PhD in Microvascular Angina, based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital and conducted in collaboration with academics from Lancaster and Manchester Universities.  The successful candidate will be supported to apply and be registered for a PhD at Lancaster University.

The post-holder will also help recruit patients to other Departmental NIHR portfolio studies and may help undertake other “in-house” research studies.  For suitable cardiology trainees, regular catheter laboratory experience will be available.

 The post-holder will work with Prof Galasko and other Consultant Cardiology colleagues in the cardiology catheter laboratory to collect data on patients undergoing microvascular assessments, including to help validate the techniques.  Depending on experience, the post-holder may also be able learn coronary interventional techniques, including invasive microvascular assessments.  Prof Galasko has 3 weekly cath lab sessions.

Salary: Clinical Scale up to ST7 (depending on experience), or PhD Stipend scale, depending on candidate

 

 

Main duties of the job

1.    Lead a research project focused on coronary and non-coronary microvascular dysfunction, including both retrospective and prospective analyses.

2.    The post holder must comply with all relevant policies, procedures and training on infection prevention and control. 

3.    Support patient recruitment, data collection, and follow-up for academic and commercial clinical trials.

4.    Maintain high standards of research governance, including accurate documentation and ethical compliance.

5.    Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, and university academics.

6.    Produce first-author research publications and contribute to grant writing opportunities.

7.    Manage research timelines and deliver outputs independently.

8.    Work closely with Prof Galasko and University Supervisors.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The research project plans to:

1)    Undertake a literature review.

2)    Retrospectively analyse an extensive clinical database of patients who have undergone microvascular studies, assessing predictors and clinical outcomes.

3)    Assess reliability of invasive microvascular assessments, including potentially novel methods of assessment.

4)    Prospectively assess microvascular function in other vascular beds, working with Professor Adam Greenstein and his team at Manchester University. 

5)    Use spectrochemical analyses of liquid biopsies (blood plasma or serum, urine or saliva) with subsequent chemometric investigation to initiate the development of a predictive algorithm for microvascular disease, working with Professor Frank Martin at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals.

6)    Develop other appropriate studies in microvascular dysfunction.
