Job overview

This post is for 2 x 12 Months Fixed Term and 1 x 6 month Fixed Term

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join our expanding patient centred and supportive Gastroenterology department at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting time to join us with opportunity to support inpatient and outpatient transformation as part of a blended workforce as we develop our Luminal and Liver services and further establish novel inpatient and outpatient pathways.

Our Gastroenterology and Liver service is one of the busiest in the UK – we offer a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for all gastroenterological conditions. Our JAG accredited, performance driven and patient centred Endoscopy unit delivers approximately 15,000 procedures per annum and is a spoke centre for the North-West Endoscopy training academy and is the admin hub for Bowel cancer screening within the Lancashire region.

This post will provide the successful candidate with excellent experience and training in Gastroenterology. Our thriving Gastroenterology unit has a high reputation for good quality Gastroenterology and Endoscopy training and the experience gained through this post has in the past supported trainees to obtain a National Training Number and pursue a career in Gastroenterology. Blackpool Teaching Hospitals is an NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre and involvement in Gastroenterology related audit, quality improvement projects and research would be fully supported.

Main duties of the job

This post will support the ongoing provision of a timely, quality and safe specialist Gastroenterology and Liver service. The successful candidate will support Inpatient and Outpatient Gastroenterology transformation and Gastroenterology and Endoscopy recovery and restoration.  Endoscopy training will be supported during the Luminal and Endoscopy rotations. The post will include a commitment to Gastroenterology on-call enhancing the overall training experience whilst supporting delivery of a 7-day Gastroenterology in-reach service and Gastroenterology Speciality reviews and ward cover on a rotational basis.

Gastroenterology and Endoscopy administrative duties within the Department will also be undertaken regularly.

The template for Consultant outpatient clinics is based as a minimum on the RCP template. A standard clinic comprises 12 patients and includes a combination of new, fast track and follow-up patients with each patient allocated 15-20 minutes. This template will depending on the experience of the trainee increase by up to 50% when a Gastroenterology Registrar has been allocated to clinic.

Endoscopy Training lists comprise 6-8 units and are adjusted to trainee requirements. The department has a well established record in supporting Endoscopy training and all trainers have undertaken train the trainers courses. We have a dedicated Endoscopy training lead and Endoscopy trainee meetings are undertaken monthly to support and optimise the Endoscopy training experience.
