The post holder will undertake repairs, maintenance and installation work appropriate to core specialist skills across all healthcare facilities, dealing with mainly the joinery fabric, fixtures and fittings but will also include a comprehensive range of other building structures and fittings.

Main duties of the job

Undertake unsupervised non routine joinery, carpentry diagnostic and repair work that requires the attention of a fully qualified craftsman related to his training and/or experience including those items listed above and other systems, structures and equipment as required using any specialized materials or equipment as necessary.

Both the former and the latter of the above will cover work relating to:

  • Woodworking machinery operation and routine servicing
  • Fire insulation work
  • Glazing
  • Locksmith work
  • Wood treatment
  • Furniture repairs and assembly
  • Door and window manufacture
  • Fire door repair and maintenance
  • Powered door control mechanism repair and replacement
  • Suspended ceilings
  • Window blinds and curtain tracking systems
  • Manufacture and assembly of general joinery fittings and fixtures
  • Tiling
  • Minor building / small works.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·       Carry out work in confined spaces where necessary utilising the correct and appropriate PPE.

·       Carry out the duties of the post using relevant power or hand tools and equipment as required.

·       Demonstrate a good knowledge of statutory legislation, health and safety legislation and workshop safety practices in relation to the post, staff, patients and public.

·       Instruct and assist others on all systems and equipment and any other aspects of his/her work.

·       To liaise with management, contractors or suppliers to identify materials and equipment required for the repair or maintenance of building systems, structures or equipment.

·       To operate where necessary within the constraints of a formal permit to work system to ensure safe and satisfactory compliance with any applicable legislative requirements.

·       Participate in the preparation of formal or informal Risk assessments and method statements in support of Permits to Work or work of a higher than average risk level.

·       Ensure a safe working environment is maintained for self and others, taking appropriate action as necessary in line with legislation, Trust and departmental requirements.

·       Lift and manoeuvre potentially heavy goods, materials and equipment in accordance with manual handling regulations and good practice.

·       Undertake training as necessary in order to maintain competency levels and learn new skills as may be reasonably requested.

·       Understand, appreciate and at all times promote co-operation within the department and between the department and its clients.

·       To guarantee to produce work to consistently high standards across the whole range of duties.

·       Assist other trades in the performance of their duties as required and as required to do so in either an active or a safety role.

·       Be prepared to accept abnormal start and finish times in order to carry out work areas of a sensitive nature in order to cause minimum disruption to patients, public or staff.

·       To carry out work in all areas of the estate owned or maintained by the Trust.

·       Maintain in a clear orderly and concise fashion all required work records and test data.

·       The department aspires to operate a multi skill system therefore it is expected that whilst each craftsman has a core trade he/she will be expected to show a willingness and ability to perform tasks beyond those of the core trade.

·       Must hold a current clean drivers licence and be prepared to drive trust vehicles as required.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Hold a current clean driving licence.
  • The post holder will have served a recognised and registered apprenticeship and hold a minimum City and Guilds level 3 Craft Certificate in carpentry and joinery or similar trade certificate in the relevant core skills. Previous appropriate working experience within a maintenance environment of at least two years post apprenticeship will be required.

Knowledge & Experience: Specialist

  • Experience as a joiner within the maintenance environment
  • Good interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively in writing, verbally and face to face
  • Be able to use PDA/Tablet/Mobile Device
Desirable criteria
  • A general understanding of the NHS procurement process Experience of facilitating partnership working, decision making and conflict resolution

Knowledge & Experience: General

Essential criteria
  • Excellent working knowledge and understanding of the provision of maintenance services and compliance requirements in the given service functions.
