The successful candidate will join a multi-professional team based on the Victoria Hospital site and will also give clinical opinions when requested by consultant colleagues.
The clinical commitments of this post will include responsibility for inpatient and outpatient care at Blackpool Victoria Hospital (BVH). There is also a commitment to give opinions on ophthalmic problems in peripheral hospitals:
The outpatient work will be conducted at BVH in a dedicated ophthalmic suite in the main outpatient department and within the Ophthalmic Surgical Unit and Medical Retina Unit.
The post holder will be employed by Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post is a permanent post within the structure.
Our Ophthalmology service has a team of 8 consultants (including vacancies), 6 speciality doctors and 4 speciality trainees. This role will require the delivery of face-to-face onsite clinical sessions or within a community-based environment. The provision of assessment and management of a range of Ophthalmology conditions. Educate patients and their families on conditions, treatment options, and post-operative care. Stay current with advancements in Ophthalmology treatments, technologies, and best practices.
Main duties of the job
To ensure safe management of patients within the ophthalmic directorate.
To participate in outpatient clinics, theatre and triage, and provide autonomous care in general and sub-speciality clinics and theatre procedures based on relevant skills and experience.
To participate in the review process of referrals from other specialties regarding clinical management, rehabilitation, and discharge planning.
To actively support the team in providing timely care and management of patients (triage of referrals, staff/ patient queries, perioperative care/ reviews, organizing/ performing operating lists etc).
The post holder will be expected to take on leadership roles to support the development of services in the unit. The post holder will actively participate in service improvement and be willing to take up additional responsibilities appropriate to the post to help safe running of service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This will involve: -
- Acting as a role model for the Medical and the wider multi-professional team
- Manage own caseload and ensure all correspondence/actions for patients is completed
- Work in collaboration with the other health care professionals across organisational boundaries to ensure the service meets the needs of the patents.
- The post holder will have overall accountability for the patients they operate on and participate in the peri-operative management of the patients and in any national data collection requirements for surgical procedures performed.
The post holder will be required to maintain their knowledge and skills. Study leave provision will be available to the post holder.
To participate in Training of Junior Medical Staff and Medical Students and be willing to taking on roles to lead and assist the provision of training.
The post holder will be expected to undertake an annual appraisal by their respective Consultant.
Post holders with Research Interests will be actively encouraged
You will be required to provide out of hours cover via on call as well as cover for your colleagues' periods of leave

Education & Qualification
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and license to practice
- Previous experience of at least 12 years in Ophthalmology and 6 years in a relevant speciality in the speciality doctor grade
Desirable criteria
- Possession of a post graduate qualification (FRCOphth, MRCOphth, FRCS)
- Higher/ advanced sub- speciality training/ fellowship
- Higher degree (eg. MD or PhD)
Experience & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Able to undertake independent general and sub-specialty clinics laser Sub-specialty clinical and surgical experience and ability to perform independent procedures.
- Experience teaching undergraduates, postgraduates and non medical staff with demonstration of effective teaching skills
- Experience in undertaking audits and understanding of the principles of audit and research
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of working in the NHS / experience of NHS working practices and systems
- Experience of supervision of other staff
- Experience in service development and improvement in Ophthalmology
Skills and Ability
Essential criteria
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload and to delegate responsibility and supervise staff.
- Ability to motivate and inspire a multi-disciplinary team and work sensitively within teams and across organisations

- Agreement to live within 15 miles of the Trust or within 30 minutes travel by car. Car owner with full driving licence
