Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, with services covering the local authority areas of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. The Trust is part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS) supporting a population of around 1.6 million people.

We have three main hospitals providing acute services to around 330,000 local residents. The organisation also provides specialist tertiary care for cardiac and haematology services, delivers community health services to over 445,000 residents including those in North Lancashire and hosts the National Artificial Eye Service across England. Plus, we provide urgent and emergency care services to an estimated 18 million people who visit the seaside resort each year. We employ over 7000 people from 68 different countries.

Job overview

We have a team of staff based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital who will talk you through your role, make sure you are comfortable with your surroundings and will be on hand to answer any questions or concerns you may have while you are a volunteer.

We also like to say thank you to all our volunteers for their hard work and dedication in a variety of ways; we invite all of our volunteers to social activities held throughout the year and we put on a special recognition ceremony to honour all the people who give up their time to help our hospital staff and patients.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of this role include:

  • To positively promote patient and public partnership by valuing the contribution of each Panel member
  • To provide the perspective of patients and the public
  • To provide updates on the work of the Influence Panel at Trust Committee meetings
  • To work with the Trust to develop services from the perspective of the patient
  • To become involved in Trust policies as they develop and change
  • To work with the Trust in deciding priorities for patient surveys and focus groups
  • To support and influence the development of patient information, including leaflets, posters, etc within the Trust
  • To provide a forum for the Influence Panel Members to meet within the Trust
  • To work alongside with other patient and public involvement groups / activities that are taking place so that patient and carers are able to contribute and influence, at all stages of organisational development and quality improvement.
  • To work within the remit of a signed contract identifying what is expected of a panel member

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

All volunteers will complete a six week trial as an opportunity for them to check if they will enjoy volunteering, and for us to assess the suitability of their voluntary role. At all times volunteers will be expected to:
Participate in appropriate training required by the Trust, the Voluntary Services Department and the respective area;
Promote a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere;
Offer a smile to everyone and engage in friendly and appropriate conversation with those people who would like to talk;
Demonstrate respect and sensitivity to all individuals, ensuring confidentiality is maintained at all times;
Refer individuals to the appropriate member of staff where necessary;
Engage in any other appropriate activity under the guidance and support of a member of staff.

Applicant requirements

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
