Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the delivery of a wide range of respiratory investigations including:

Spirometry, Diffusion studies, Plethysmography, Bronchial challenge testing, Six minute walks, Muscle pressure tests ( MIPS/MEPS/SNIP)

You will also be responsible for providing support to the Sleep Service, performing Overnight Oximetry, Multi -Channel Respiratory Sleep studies and CPAP Therapy reviews and set ups.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will play a key role in the delivery of the Respiratory Physiology Service at Preston CDC, Royal Preston and Chorley District Hospital with support from the Respiratory Physiology team. You will play an active role in the delivery of  the day to day sleep and respiratory physiology services. This will involve setting up and analysis of home sleep studies, initiation and follow up of CPAP therapy and performing full lung function tests.

The successful candidate must be able to perform a full range of respiratory investigations including spirometry, diffusion, plethysmography, bronchial challenge testing, exercise testing and assessment of sleep disorders and be willing to undertake the challenge of developing these services further.

You will be self-motivated, well organised, have excellent interpersonal skills. You must have a flexible attitude and the willingness to travel between sites.

Perform analyse and report all routine lung function investigations within Respiratory Physiology Laboratory including Spirometry, diffusion studies, lung volume measurements, 6 min walk tests  and tests of muscle pressure to required national standard.

Perform, analyse and report Overnight Oximetry and Respiratory multichannel sleep studies.

Contribute to the day to day requirements of the Sleep and CPAP service.

Ensure calibration and quality control of equipment is carried out for all procedures.

Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation 

To participate in education and training of junior staff.

Actively participate in research studies.

Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice.

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Clinical Physiology, PTP or equivalent
  • RCCP registration or equivalent (or working towards)
  • Up-to-date Continual professional development
Desirable criteria
  • ARTP parts 1 and 2 or specialist knowledge in practical and theoretical respiratory analysis including relevant disorders.
  • ILS certificate
  • Work based assessor or mentor qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience as a respiratory physiologist in lung function
  • Evidence of clinical competence in the area of respiratory investigations
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing own time and work load.
  • Experience as a respiratory physiologist in sleep.
