Job overview
Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow (Registrar grade equivalent) in General Surgery at Whittington Health NHS Trust. This is a fixed term post initially for 12 months. There will be the option to extend these contracts dependent on departmental requirements and applicant performance and appraisal.
Please note that this is not a role offering candidates a formal post-graduate research programme. Traditionally post holders to this job have been residents already undertaking research at local academic centres, who require a clinical post to support their post-graduate degrees. Those not currently undertaking any formal research are also encouraged to apply if they feel such a role may facilitate their academic or career aspirations. The trust currently employs 2 doctors in the Clinical Research Fellow role.
The posts mostly involve covering a proportion of the out of hours nights component of the Resident rota. Successful candidates will be asked to cover weeknights Mon-Wed in alternate weeks. There is in addition a nominal long day on call commitment (one Thursday every 6 weeks). Current post holders also undertake 2 outpatient clinics in alternate weeks - but this arrangement is entirely negotiable dependent on applicants’ external research commitments.
This will be a less than full time (LFT) post with current work schedule for incumbent doctors approx. 0.82 WTE.

Working for our organisation
Whittington Health serves a richly diverse population and works hard to ensure that all our services are fair and equally accessible to everyone. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the way we look after our staff. We aim to employ a workforce which is as representative as possible of this population, so we are open to the value of differences in age, disability, gender, marital status, pregnancy and maternity, race, sexual orientation, and religion or belief. The Trust believes that as a public sector organisation we have an obligation to have recruitment, training, promotion and other formal employment policies and procedures that are sensitive to these differences. We think that by doing so, we are better able to treat our patients as well as being a better place to work.
