Job overview
To assist, under supervision of a midwife, the provision of safe, effective, and evidence-based care to all women and their families accessing maternity services.
The postholder will support and observe the woman and her baby through the antenatal, postnatal, and intrapartum period, reporting to the midwife/team leader any changes or information concerning the wellbeing of the woman and her family.
The post holder regularly works without direct supervision.
Confidentiality and privacy must be always adhered to.
Responsible for recording detailed clinical information including completing relevant assessment tools e.g., observations, national, manual handling and local assessments pertaining to the health and well-being of the mother and baby.
Representing the team as MCA.
To contribute to women and their families having a normal and positive birth experience, as far is possible in each situation.
Main duties of the job
· Receive details of daily duties from midwife, use own discretion when prioritising care – seek help/advice from senior staff when unsure
· Undertake observations – temperature, pulse, and blood pressure, urinalysis, weight as directed and reporting findings
· Support women with and during clinical procedures including with their personal hygiene as necessary (such as after birth)
· Assist and support staff in the operating theatre during caesarean sections or instrumental deliveries
· Daily cleaning and checking of equipment using the ‘I am clean’ stickers once cleaning have been done
· Providing support, under supervision of midwife, to labouring women example, rubbing their back, and offering emotional support
· Support the women requiring assistance with infant feeding
· Performing daily neonatal observations
· Recognise and report any abnormal or emergency situations to the midwife
· Perform blood tests as directed and required using phlebotomy techniques (following training)
· Setting up of equipment for phototherapy

Essential criteria
- NVQ/Social Care BTEC Level 3
- Functional skills Level 2 or GCSE Maths and English

Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Understanding of health care delivery in the NHS
- Experience of working in Acute Hospital setting or care background, in a HCSW role or equivalent
- Experience of delivering personal care to patients
- Experience of using computers or willing to undertake training in local computer systems
- Knowledge of basic IT systems or willing to undertake training
- Knowledge of care and related procedures and relevant legislation
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of data protection and health and safety issues
