Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Perinatal Occupational Therapists to work in our Community Perinatal Mental Health Team - Barnet site.
The North London Partners Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service is a community mental health service for pregnant and postnatal women with severe and complex mental illness. The aim of the team is to detect, prevent and treat perinatal mental health problems to improve the experience of pregnancy and the first year postpartum for women and their families.
Staff work closely with the five maternity sites in North Central London; University College London Hospital, Whittington Hospital, Royal Free Hospital, Barnet Hospital and North Middlesex University Hospital. Clinics run at maternity sites, children’s centres and community centres across the boroughs as well as home visits. The successful post holder must be willing to travel and work flexibly.
Main duties of the job
In addition to the focus on maternal mental health, specialist perinatal mental health services also consider the infant and mother-infant relationship. Promoting the emotional and physical wellbeing and development of the mother and infant are central to the work of all professionals within high quality perinatal mental health services.
The post holder will be supported by the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist to manage a caseload of clients in line with the requirements of the service line operational policy and service line strategy and that safe, evidence based, effective, culturally competent care is delivered in a timely manner to service users.
The post holder will formulate, implement and review plans for the treatment and management of women with a full range of clinical presenting problems. Additionally, they will thoroughly assess risk; formulate safe and effective risk management plans and document and communicate these clearly and concisely. Specialist Occupational Therapy interventions will be applied utilising specialist assessment and evaluation tools drawn from the Model of Human Occupation. The post holder may be expected to participate in formal child protection procedures and to be involved in interagency work with families. Awareness of current policies and practice in this area is essential.
Working for our organisation
Camden & Islington Mental Health Foundation Trust jointly with Barnet, Enfield & Haringey Mental Health Trust have developed perinatal mental health services across five boroughs in the North Central London area. The service has been running since 2017 and provides specialist perinatal mental health services across the boroughs of Camden, Islington, Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey. The service operates with 3 clinical sub-teams:
-West team (Barnet) based at N12 0DZ
-East team (Enfield & Haringey) based at N9 7HD &
-South team (Camden & Islington) based at NW1 0PE
We have one vacancy for an enthusiastic clinician to join the West (Barnet) subteam.
The sub-teams consist of a full MDT, consultant psychiatrists, clinical/counselling psychologists, nurses, occupational therapist, social worker, family therapist, nursery nurses, peer support worker and pharmacist. MDT sub-teams staff work closely with the maternity sites in North Central London. These are Barnet Hospital, Royal Free Hospital (West team), North Middlesex University Hospital, (East team), and University College Hospital and Whittington Hospital, (South team).
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Appropriate training, support and regular supervision will be provided by MDT and the Occupational Therapy Lead. Some experience of supervision and training others is required.
In carrying out this role the post holder will make best use of the resources available to them; ensuring that at all times best use is made of health and social care resources to assist recovery and re-enablement. The post holder will support governance and audit within the team, ensuring that service delivery focuses on the quality agenda and that dignity, privacy and respect is afforded at all times to service users.

Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Diploma or degree leading to professional Registered qualification in Nursing, Occupational Therapy or Social Work
- Evidence of recent and or on-going post registration academic study relevant to practice
- Current registration with relevant professional body
Desirable criteria
- CBT qualification or other relevant qualification i.e. solution focused therapy, cognitive stimulation therapy, Mentalisation Based Therapy etc.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity
Desirable criteria
- Post-qualification experience working with women in the perinatal period with severe and enduring mental health needs as well as their families, carers and networks
Skills, Abilities, Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable understanding and experience of utilising a variety of assessment tools as well as service specialist tools currently used in practice in relation to assessing / planning care needs and determining risk
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
