Job overview
Applicants are invited to apply for a Bariatric Surgery Fellow post in General Surgery for one year on a fixed term contract. This post will be based at St Mary’s Hospital but may include cross site working.
The successful candidate will be working at the middle grade level as a Trust Grade Registrar with previous experience in Surgery and looking to further develop their knowledge and skills in the area.
Main duties of the job
Applicants must be eligible for registration or hold full registration with the GMC and will be expected to participate in a 1:8 on-call rota. They must have the ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists, operating lists and rotas as well as demonstrate strong communication and team working skills.
The department has a growing quality improvement, research and audit unit and involvement in research is also actively encouraged.
All applicants must be within 3 months of CCT (certificate of completion of training) or an equivalent qualification. This requirement is essential for your application to be considered.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
OB PURPOSE
The post holder is intended to work at Registrar level, supporting and aiding the clinical ward work, the Outpatient workload and Elective and Emergency operating of the Department. A pay banding supplement is payable for participation in the on-call rota at middle grade level.
KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

MAIN DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS AREAS:
Post-holders will be working at the middle grade level as a Trust Grade Registrar and be
Part of a team of 9 at the middle grade level within the General Surgery department.
Although this post is not a recognised training post, you will have a wide opportunity to develop your surgical skills and you will be expected to have a strong academic commitment and to be part of the ongoing academic and audit activities of the department.
You will be part of a 1 in 8 on call rota.

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- On GMC’s register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
- On GMC’s Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
- Appropriate Royal College Membership
- Accredited in General Surgery
Desirable criteria
- MD (Res), MS or PHD in a related field
Knowledge/ Skills
Essential criteria
- Have worked at senior registrar level in a general surgical department; including on call / emergency take
- Proficient and experienced in general laparoscopic surgical procedures (cholecystectomy, appendecectomy and hernias).
- IT Skills and computer literacy
Desirable criteria
- Experience in bariatric surgery
- Clinical experience in bariatric surgery (gastric bands, sleeves and bypass surgery)
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff
Leadership/Management skills
Essential criteria
- Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
- Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.
- Knowledge of finance/budgets
- Management of staff
Audit
Essential criteria
- Understanding of principles of clinical audit
- Undertaken full clinical audit cycle including data collection, presentation and making recommendations
Desirable criteria
- Have implemented service/clinical improvements based on audit results
Completion of training.

- All applicants must be within 3 months of CCT (certificate of completion of training) or an equivalent qualification.
Academic achievements including research/publications
Essential criteria
- Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at senior SpR level at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
