Job overview
Applications are invited for a full time Consultant paediatric hepatologist join the highly specialised paediatric liver service at the King’s College Hospital, London. The remit of the post holder will be to work with in the multidisciplinary team but particularly focus on the care of young adults with liver disease while transitioning to the adult services.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work very closely with Dr Marianne Samyn who leads this aspect of the service. The post holder will be based at the Denmark Hill campus of KCH, London. The on-call commitment will be 1;7 rota with prospective cover. There is a commitment to undertake routine job planned work on Saturdays/Sundays and Bank holidays as part of the total job planned PAs.

The Variety Children's Hospital, the Children's Outpatients Department and the Department of Child Psychiatry are adjacent to one another on the third floor of King's College Hospital. The Variety Children's Hospital contains four wards, a 16-bedded paediatric critical care unit (PICU and HDU) and a day case unit. There are ample facilities for parents to stay with their children. Paediatric staff are responsible for the paediatric care of all patients admitted to the Variety Club Children's Hospital. The Outpatient and Therapy Departments include nine consulting rooms, an audiology room, treatment room, speech and occupational therapy, physiotherapy unit, paediatric dieticians, and nurse specialist offices as well as a fully equipped school.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
PURPOSE OF JOB
All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust’s sites as required by the service. As a senior employee of the Trust, you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients. Integral to these responsibilities are the following:
· The provision of a first-class clinical service
· Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
· Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London / KHP
· Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
· Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans
· Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust
Person specification
Qualifications and Regsitration
Essential criteria
- Registerable medical qualification
- MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent
- Hold CCT in paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and Nutrition or equivalent non UK training qualification; or alternatively will obtain within 6 months of interview date
- Name to be on Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
Desirable criteria
- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
Training and Experience
Essential criteria
- CCT or equivalent in Paediatric Gastroenterology
- Wide experience in all aspects of paediatrics culminating in award of CCT or equivalent in paediatrics
- Training and experience in hepatology and transplantation
- On the day of interview , applicants must be within 6 months of CCT or be in final stages of portfolio application or be fully registered on the GMC Paediatric Specialist Register. Any applications not meeting these criteria will not be considered.
- Evidenced Level 3 safeguarding training
Desirable criteria
- Experience in GI endoscopy and management of varices and PHT
Audit, Research and Publications
Essential criteria
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects
- Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
- Experience of clinical research.
- Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
Desirable criteria
- Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of paediatric hepatology.
- Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
Management and Leadership
Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
Desirable criteria
- Management course and/or qualification
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.
Desirable criteria
- Teaching skills course/qualification
