Job overview
We are looking for an experienced and dynamic pharmacist to lead the pharmacy service to Sexual Health and HIV, within the Planned Medicine Care Group.
This 8B principal pharmacist is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the pharmacy service delivered at the Caldecot Centre, which provides medical, social and welfare support for people living with HIV. They act as the Pharmacy lead for sexual health, providing advice and acting as a key contact for the Havens and other Trust Sexual Health services. The post holder manages the Caldecot Pharmacy team, and ensures that the services provided are effective, inclusive and comprehensive, delivering excellent care to our local population.
The successful candidate must be an expert in medicines use in sexual health and HIV with a proven track record in successful team work and influencing skills. They will also demonstrate excellent communication, organisation and leadership skills.
This is an exciting time to join King's as the Caldecot Pharmacy team develops new pharmacy-led services and the Pharmacy team more broadly optimises workflows after recent implementation of our joint electronic health record, Epic. We are working together to deliver a recently launched clinical pharmacy strategy which will include delivering a development programme for principal pharamcists. This role provides opportunities to deepen your involvement with research and clinical trials, and advance your managerial and leadership responsibilities.
Main duties of the job
The focus of the post is on ensuring the provision of high quality, safe, comprehensive (clinical, supply, financial and operational) pharmaceutical services, in accordance with the priorities set by the post holder, Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, General Manager and Clinical Director(s). The post holder is responsible for
- Acting as a specialist role model and as an expert in sexual health & HIV and demonstrating an advanced level of knowledge in the field
- Ensuring the safe, efficacious and cost-effective use of drugs within the Care Group
- Ensuring a high level of clinical input across the Care Group
- Ensuring the daily operations of the Caldecot Pharmacy meet the needs of service users
- Ensuring clinical trials delivered at the Caldecot Pharmacy are managed effectively and in accordance with regulatory requirements
- Acting as the pharmacy lead for the Havens and Sexual Health services
- Developing and implementing guidelines and policies for the use of medicines
- Regular financial reporting, drug usage and expenditure forecasting
- Developing the pharmacy service to the Care Group
- Teaching and training within the Trust and externally
- Initiating and coordinating research and development activity within the specialist area

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To lead clinical pharmacy services for patients treated within the Care Group in accordance with the priorities set by the post holder, Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, General Manager and Clinical Director(s) in order to ensure safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs in these patients
- To operationally lead and be accountable for the Pharmacy service delivered at the Caldecot Pharmacy, ensuring that the service is delivered in line within legal and quality standards and meets the needs of service users
- To lead locally on the delivery of clinical trials delivered to service users of the Caldecot Pharmacy, working in collaboration with the Associate Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Trials to ensure that requirements are met
- To lead on Pharmacy and medicines use for the Haven and Sexual Health Services.
- To develop clinical pharmacy services for patients in the Care Group in accordance with objectives set in order to advance the safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs in these patients.
- To identify a vision for the delivery of pharmaceutical services to the Care Group.
- To deliver this vision within the boundaries of national and local priorities.
- To deliver the clinical governance agenda in relation to drug use in the Care Group and be an active member of the Care Groups clinical governance committee.
- To motivate and inspire others (both within pharmacy and the Care Group).
- To proactively develop clinical pharmacy services in line with local and national objectives.

- To extend the boundaries of the profession.
- To ensure that issues relating to pharmaceutical care are appropriately represented within the Care Group.
- To work collaboratively with senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management and to participate in the development of pharmacy services in accordance with the agreed objectives.
- Responsible for policy implementation and service development of the specialist pharmacy services within the Care Group.
- To manage and develop the provision of clinical pharmacy services to all wards, units and departments in the Care Group in accordance with the priorities set by the post holder, Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services, General Manager and Clinical Director.
- To work with clinicians, nurses and other Trust staff to develop, implement and monitor policies, guidelines, protocols and procedures at Trust and regional level, as required.
- To propose and comment on policy and service changes and plans within the clinical pharmacy service.
- To contribute to, and participate in, pharmacy service developments, and co-ordinate and implement them within the Care Group, in line with departmental and Trust policy.
- To ensure services provided are in line with national agendas, policies, guidelines and frameworks.
- To actively participate in and contribute to the development, promotion and local implementation of local and regional prescribing and clinical services guidance.
- To establish processes for the setting of standards of care
- To work with the Deputy Chief Pharmacists to strategically develop clinical or operational pharmacy services across the Trust
- To lead on specific projects or initiatives across the Pharmacy Service
- To be a member of and actively participate in Trust-wide committees relevant to role.
- To develop clinical pathways in the specialty.
- To work with the Principal Pharmacist, Clinical Services, Formulary Lead and Consultants to support applications for drugs to be added to the Joint Formulary
- To ensure the compilation and maintenance of a comprehensive resource file for use by on-call staff and other pharmacists
- To be responsible for the provision of a highly specialised pharmacy service (clinical, dispensing and supply) to patients within the Care Group.
- To provide highly specialised evidence-based clinical advice and information (doses, interaction, adverse effects, drug availability, complex dose calculations) to nursing and medical staff (within the Trust and externally) on the management of individual patients, in accordance with legislation.
- To act as a pharmacist independent prescriber to optimise the care of patients.
- To participate in consultant ward rounds.

Essential criteria
- Masters degree MPharm
- Registered Pharmacist MRPharmS (Significant competency assessed and examined professional registration)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or Pharmacy Practice

- Registered Supplementary or Independent Prescriber

- Expert clinical knowledge and skills relevant to area of practice
- Demonstrate high organisational skills - identifying, planning, organising and developing systems to improve service delivery
