Are you wanting a new, innovative and incredibly exciting role providing vocational rehabilitation occupational therapy across community health services and primary care.

This fixed term contract until March 31st 2026 is based on the original RCOT pilot, working with primary care to support individuals with common musculo-skeletal and mental health conditions to return to and prevent time away from work.

We are looking for an experienced occupational therapist to work 0.8wte alongside GP practices to provide vocational rehabilitation advice and signposting, assessment and intervention to support individuals to return to or maintain their work role; and advice and signposting for those wishing to return to employment.

Main duties of the job

  • To work at an advanced level within the four pillars of advanced clinical practice: Clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research.
  • To take responsibility for developing and shaping the role to meet the needs of the local population in consultation with the PCN leads
  • To autonomously utilise advanced clinical practice knowledge and skills to provide specialist vocational assessment and rehabilitation for patients with common mental health disorders and musculo-skeletal problems and occupational therapy assessment and intervention to the Primary Care Network (PCN) agreed population.
  • To evidence high levels of problem solving, clinical reasoning and exercise independence of judgement to assess treat and manage own caseload of vocational rehab within the PCN.
  • To develop processes to optimise service flow, outcome measurement and present data on the developing role within the PCN.
  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a patient -facing role, using their expert knowledge of the impact of physical, social, psychological, and environmental and mental health issues on functional independence and vocation impacting an individual’s ability to maintain work, and independence

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree-level professional qualification in Occupational therapy
  • HCPC registration
  • High level post-graduate courses in relevant clinical and non-clinical areas
  • Educated to Masters level or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of Vocational Rehabilitation Association (VRA)
  • Advanced clinical practice MSc

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad clinical experience of undertaking vocational rehabilitation assessments and intervention.
  • Experience of working with people with common mental health disorders and musculoskeletal problems.
  • MDT working
  • Development in training staff
  • Quality Improvement project experience
  • Service development experience
  • Project management experience
  • Working with people from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Data and reporting experience (e.g. KPIs)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience within physical health and mental health settings.
  • Previous clinical specialist experience in vocational rehabilitation/ community occupational therapy
  • Experience of working within primary care
  • Previous experience of establishing and developing services
  • Experience of working with service commissioners
  • Demand and capacity management

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced level of clinical skills in field of vocational rehabilitation occupational therapy.
  • Clear, concise verbal and written reporting skills. IM&T skills, e.g. able to use Word, Excel; access information from database
