Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a physiology or biology background who would like a career in Respiratory Physiology.  The post is fixed term for one year,  and during this time we would offer training, that will lead you to to be able to undertake a range of respiratory investigations. These include spirometry, full lung function testing with body plethysmography, fractional nitric oxide tests (FeNO) and field exercise testing.

You will be based at Central Middlesex Hospital, but also rotate with our other Trust site at Northwick Park Hospital. You will join the small but busy team who are an integral part of the LNWUH NHS Trust Respiratory and Sleep service, working closely with our physician colleagues. You would also be involved with sleep diagnostics including oximetry and polygraphy studies, and both the initiating and monitoring of CPAP therapy.

You may be a lone worker at times and when trained you would be expected to be able to work independently, and may be required to work across sites as per the Rota.

Continuous professional development is encouraged, allowing you to develop your skills and knowledge. You will be given support towards achieving AHCS registration.

Main duties of the job

  • Spirometry using a range of spirometers
  • Measurement of dynamic lung volumes by flow volume loops
  • Measurement of transfer factor by single breath method
  • Measurement of static lung volumes by helium dilution, nitrogen washout and body plethysmography
  • Assessment of bronchodilator response
  • Inhaler education
  • Field exercise testing, using 6 minute walk
  • FeNO testing
  • Polygraphy sleep studies
  • CPAP initiation
  • CPAP patient support

  • Degree in Respiratory Physiology or equivalent subject.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of customer or patient care
