Job overview

We are excited to recruit an enthusiastic and dedicated respiratory physiologist to the role of Band 6 Senior Respiratory Physiologist to join our Respiratory Physiology team in London North West Healthcare NHS Trust. The role will be based primarily at Ealing Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), with rotations to our Lung Function and Sleep Services at Central Middlesex and Northwick Park Hospitals.

Our department offers a range of standard lung function and sleep diagnostic testing as well as CPAP therapy across our Trust sites, as outlined below in Main Duties. Our physiologists assess patients referred internally by our consultants and externally from GP surgeries through direct access to diagnostics pathways at Ealing CDC. We work closely with our MDT teams including consultants, nurses, admin teams and other referring teams.

As a Band 6 Senior Respiratory Physiologist you are expected to have prior knowledge, skills and experiences in most of the diagnostic procedures and responsibilities outlined in the job description, and to work independently. You will be a point of contact for junior colleagues and will partake in staff training and competency assessment. You will be encouraged and supported to develop your skills further. Clinical work may involve lone working at times and/or deputising for the Chief Physiologist as the senior physiologist in clinic.

Main duties of the job

  •       Performing accurate and reliable lung function and sleep diagnostic testing and reporting independently, following competency assessment, including FeNO, spirometry, bronchodilator reversibility, gas diffusion, static lung volumes (body plethysmography and Nitrogen washout), 6 minute walk test, set up and analysis of oximetry and limited multi-channel polygraphy studies.
  •      Interpreting and reporting independently on the above diagnostic tests.
  •        Ensuring accurate, secure, timely and confidential record keeping of departmental documents and patient records, and uploading patient test results to the Trust’s medical record system.
  •    Maintaining quality assurance in clinical and non-clinical responsibilities through calibration, biocalibration, validation, participation in audits and accurate record-keeping of diaries and trackers for pathway metrics.
  •       Ensuring patient safety throughout their diagnostic pathway, including when triaging their diagnostic test requests, screening for contraindications and conducting patient questionnaires for screening of clinical history.
  •          Developing and partaking in inhouse training and competency framework to ensure compliance with local and professional standards.
  •          Mentoring, training and assessing colleagues on inhouse competencies.
  •           Deputising for the Chief Respiratory Physiologist where required.
  •
