Job overview

 The National Deaf Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service is part of a high quality comprehensive national service for children, young people, and their families up to eighteen years of age who are severely or profoundly deaf and have significant difficulties with their mental health. You would be joining a well-established multi-disciplinary team; currently consisting of Psychiatry, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Nursing, Social work, and Family Therapy. 

The role of the Assistant Psychologist is t
o support and enhance the professional psychological care of clients within the service, across all sectors of care; providing psychological assessment and psychological interventions under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist, working independently according to a plan agreed with a qualified clinical psychologist and within the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures. The post holder will also assist in clinically related administration, conduct audits, collection of statistics, and development of audit and/or research projects, teaching, and project work.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in the London outpatient team including interface with other National Deaf CAMHS services (Kent and Cambridge for instance) and receive clinical supervision and support from the Clinical Psychologists within these teams.

  • You will need at least a 2:1 degree in psychology, Level One BSL and good conversational skills in BSL, an understanding of the needs and difficulties of deaf people with mental health problems and/or other disabilities, experience of working with people with mental health problems and/or other disabilities, and good research skills (including up to date I.T. skills). Experience of working with d/Deaf people would be valuable, but we recognize that not all applicants will have had this opportunity. Tailored induction and training will be provided to enable you to work effectively with this client group.

About our location:

Springfield University Hospital, Tooting

Our largest, 19-ward site is in Springfield Village, created following our £150m investment into two new world class mental health facilities. A 32-acre public park, shops and cafes are coming soon. Close to shops, cafes and Tooting Bec on the Northern Line plus Earlsfield and Tooting rail stations and bus routes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· To undertake protocol based psychological assessments of clients applying psychological, including neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care.

· To assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s problems.

· To work with other staff to assess outpatients, develop individualised intervention / treatment plans and review their care.

· To assist in the development of a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings where care takes place.

· To attend and contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings.

Person specification

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology
  • Eligible for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
  • British Sign Language Level 1
Desirable criteria
  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis
  • British Sign Language level 2+ Post-qualification training in the field of psychological therapies

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with people with mental health problems and/or other disabilities
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of paid work in direct care provision
  • Experience of working with deaf people as colleagues and/or clients
  • Experience of using computers for report writing, databases or data-analysis, especially SPSS for Windows
  • Personal experience of deafness
