We are delighted to invite applications for a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at Liverpool University Dental Hospital (LUDH), part of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT). This is a substantive, full-time post (10 PAs), though applications from those wishing to work flexibly are warmly welcomed.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a regional centre of excellence for paediatric dental care, recognised across Cheshire and Merseyside for its leadership in dental trauma follow-up care and complex paediatric dental management.

You will work within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, with access to an on-site MDT clinic and close working relationships with oral surgery, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. The role offers a broad clinical scope, including treatment under inhalation sedation, IV sedation, and general anaesthesia.

Academic & Research Opportunities

The post includes opportunities to contribute to the Centennial Curriculum for BDS and BSc Dental Therapy students, and to supervise DCTs, StRs, and post-CCST trainees. You’ll also be encouraged to participate in research aligned with the School of Dentistry’s themes:

·       Full registration with the UK General Dental Council and inclusion on the Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry

·       CCST (or within 6 months of completion) and Membership in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent

·       Experience in managing paediatric dental patients, including under sedation and GA

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is that of Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, based at Liverpool University Dental Hospital

The post-holder will be expected to participate in continuing dental education meetings and in quality improvement projects and is expected to work within the Trusts’ Governance frameworks.

 

The post holder will have responsibility for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate learning locally and nationally.

 

The post holder will be expected to engage in their own continuing professional development and to provide continuing dental education for other staff.

 

The post holder is expected to have a high level of knowledge and expertise in the field of Paediatric Dentistry and should have an innovative approach to patient care, teaching, management and leadership.

The post holder will be expected to work under the line management of the Divisional Medical Director and Care Group Clinical Director of Liverpool University Dental Hospital.

The post holder will be expected to liaise with colleagues in other medical and dental specialties in both Trusts as required.

The post has an important role in teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The post holder is responsible to the School of Dentistry to discharge this duty, with the award of the appropriate University of Liverpool honorary contract.

 

The post holder will help to foster good relationships between the Dental Hospital and General Dental Practitioners, Community Dental Services and other health care providers.

 

The post holder expected to provide treatment under inhalation sedation, intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia.

 

The post holder will be expected to conduct new patient and treatment activity and provide consultant cover as and when necessary.

 

The appointee will be engaged in teaching and training of dental core trainees, specialty registrars and post-CCST trainees

Essential criteria
  • Experience in the day to day clinical management of a Paediatric Dentistry service
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical leadership experience in paediatric dentistry
  • Qualification in Medical Leadership

Quality improvement

  • Effective participation in clinical audit/service evaluations/quality improvement programmes
Desirable criteria
  • Lead role in the delivery of QI initiatives

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training at an appropriate level.
  • Experience in supervising DCTs & StRs

Clinical

Essential criteria
  • Experience in the multi-disciplinary and multiprofessional management of paediatric dental patients

Professional Qualifications & training

Essential criteria
  • Membership in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Possession of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent upon taking up post
Desirable criteria
  • Other Postgraduate qualification in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent (e.g. MSc, Professional Doctorate)
  • Successful completion of a SAC approved 2 year minimum training programme in a FTTA in Paediatric Dentistry, or within 6 months of such, or equivalent ‘run through’ training

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to appraise scientific literature critically
Desirable criteria
  • Research qualification (e.g. MRes, PhD)
  • Research relevant to Paediatric Dentistry

Registration

  • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council
