Job overview

Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a senior clinical research fellow in Upper GI surgery, to be based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool. The successful applicant is required for a 12-month fixed term contract with a possible extension to 24 months. The supra-regional Upper GI Surgical service is one of the largest oesophago-gastric cancer units in the country. We also provide cover for complex oesophago-gastric trauma and emergencies. The Unit comprises five Consultant Surgeons and undertakes in excess of 200 complex oesophago-gastric procedures annually. We cover a population of over 1.5 million in the North West of England, and the Isle of Man, and also receive quaternary referrals from North Wales

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individual to apply for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in Upper GI Surgery. This is a post based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital site. The successful candidate will have clinical duties in the Directorate of General Surgery at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital site (RLUH) and Broadgreen Hospital site (BGH). This post is to support the centralised Upper GI surgical service at RLUH as well as contribute to elective General Surgery, including Day Case Surgery, on the BGH site. The new post holder will get exposure to major oesophago-gastric resections for malignant disease as well as complex benign foregut cases and emergency surgery. Potential applicants should have some previous clinical exposure to Upper GI Surgery and be at ST6 or above level. Given the tertiary nature of much of the unit’s work, a post-CCT or an experienced senior surgical trainee are likely to get the most benefit from the Fellowship.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post may be more suitable to a Post CCT trainee or an experienced surgical trainee.

 

In addition, a minimally invasive Robotic programme is being established, and two consultants are undertaking benign and cancer work robotically as well as laparoscopically. The department works within a JAG accredited endoscopy unit and training, or service can be provided to the candidate depending on their level of experience. It will be encouraged that the appointed fellow develops advanced skills in endoscopy as opportunities are fantastic.

LUHFT Upper GI department actively participate in research and currently a PhD Fellow is involved in translational research.  The candidate will be encouraged to participate in research and actively run weekly research/teaching meetings. Fellow is expected to publish research work in peer–reviewed journal during the post.

QUALIFICATIONS and ELIGIBILITY

Essential criteria
  • Has achieved MBChB/MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Has MRCS
  • Has FRCS or equivalent
  • Eligible for registration with the General Medical Council

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Satisfactory completion of Core surgical training or equivalent
  • Previous experience in Upper GI Surgery at ST6+ level
Desirable criteria
  • Presentations at national or international level
  • First author publications in Pubmed cited journals

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Sound knowledge of basic clinical sciences and the ability to applying knowledge to clinical practice
  • Able to prioritise clinical need and manage time effectively
  • Aware of own limitations and know when to consult senior colleagues
  • Understand the importance of working effectively in multi-disciplinary teams
