Job overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to lead and coordinate the antenatal and newborn screening services within the Trust. This pivotal role ensures that all screening programmes are delivered in accordance with National Screening Committee (NSC) guidelines, national standards, and service specifications. You will provide expert advice, support women through positive screening results, and facilitate necessary diagnostic tests and decision-making, including the continuation or termination of pregnancy.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to make a significant impact on the delivery of antenatal and newborn screening services, ensuring high standards of care and compliance with national guidelines.
You will work closely with a range of specialist centres and agencies to ensure continuous care throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period. Additionally, the role involves developing and updating policies and protocols, conducting audits, and reporting on programme performance. You will also be responsible for delivering training to staff, participating in quality assurance assessments, and managing screening incidents in line with national guidance.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be part of the multidisciplinary team supporting clients and staff involved in the delivery of the screening pathways, and will be actively involved in the process to monitor the effectiveness of the pathways and provide clinical care and counselling where appropriate.
The post holder will be responsible for the development of appropriate screening policies, guidelines and procedures and service redesign through local audit of policies and practice, and facilitate their implementation based on national guidance.
The post holder will also be responsible for the routine monitoring of performance data against national standards provided by Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust (LWH) to support improvements in quality and changes in the programme when required.
The post holder will have highly developed specialist knowledge and experience in the field of antenatal and newborn screening to report and resolve quality and performance problems.
Education and training will be a key aspect of the role to ensure staff are competent and confident in the delivery and the management of the existing and new screening pathways.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Performances of local programmes are monitored in a variety of ways such as audits, statistics, regional meetings, Quality Assurance (QA) visits and self assessments and presence in clinical areas.
The post holder will provide annual and quarterly reports as agreed by the Head of Midwifery both at local request and national request.
The post holder will have highly developed specialist knowledge and experience in the field of antenatal and newborn screening to report and resolve quality and performance problems.
Education and training will be a key aspect of the role to ensure staff are competent and confident in the delivery and the management of the existing and new screening pathways.
The post holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, other agencies both internal and external and user representatives.

Qualifications & Learning
Essential criteria
- Current NMC Registration (Level 1 Midwifery)
- Degree in Midwifery studies or healthcare related subject
- Mentorship qualification/equivalent and or Practice Assessor training
Desirable criteria
- Management and leadership training
- ILM qualification
- Evidence of Post Registration study relevant to specialism i.e. counselling, genetic or screening courses
- Masters level education or working towards
