Job overview

The post holder will provide a safe, effective, and high quality phlebotomy service to patients, ensuring timely and accurate collection of blood specimens.

Main duties of the job

• To provide an efficient, safe correct venepuncture service to patients
• To maintain high standard in control of infection procedures
• To perform to the work practices as set out in the policy for disposal of sharps and
venepuncture policy
• To maintain patient’s safety at all times

• To maintain accurate documentation and electronic records at all times
• To ensure all blood samples are sent safely to clinical laboratories
• To work in collaboration with other Health Care professionals, and work as part of a team to provide high standard of service
• Correctly identify patients using the trust’s verification procedures
• Label and handle samples in accordance with laboratory requirements
• Provide reassurance and care to anxious or distressed patients
• Work independently on wards and other clinical areas

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Phlebotomy course certificate or training
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience as a Phlebotomist
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care or equivalent

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding.
  • Able to present information and refer questions to others where appropriate
  • Able to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
  • An understanding of prioritising nursing care
  • Basic understanding of NHS issues
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in Health Care setting.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills
  • Ability to follow procedures and protocols
  • Compassionate and patient focused
Desirable criteria
  • Basic IT skills for the use of email
