Applicants are invited to apply for the position of Burns Clinical Research Fellow.
This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated surgeon to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary care both from the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery unit based at Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate looking to progress their career in plastic and reconstructive surgery and develop an enviable research portfolio possibly towards attaining a higher degree.
The role will suit either senior trainees who wish to develop or consolidate an academic interest or alternatively more junior trainees wishing to transition both clinical and academic skills to a higher level. By the end of their post the successful candidate can expect to have an enviable academic CV and clinical logbook limited only by their level
of ambition.
The appointee will be employed as a Clinical Research Fellow and this post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 6 months, 60% research, 40% clinical.
Due to the imminent requirement to fill this post, Candidates who are not GMC registered or do not hold existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application will not progress through shortlisting stage.
Main duties of the job
This post will provide the successful applicant with especially good exposure to Burns in a busy Regional Burns Centre with a catchment area of over 6 million in population, and in a department which has an international reputation in publishing including journal editorships and a number of key textbooks.
The role provides numerous opportunities for a successful candidate to enhance their research, leadership and clinical skills as well as clinical exposure to a range of other areas including plastic and reconstructive surgery, prosthetics, paediatrics and lasers. The Burns and Plastic surgery directorate is amongst the largest in the UK with 29 Consultant Plastic Surgeons. The primary research element will focus on burns infection, with numerous secondary project opportunities. The clinical element will involve the full range of clinical, outpatient and operative experience.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Essential criteria
- Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of application
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualifications
- Microsurgery course
- FRCS (plast) or equivalent
- ATLS
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge/experience of managing plastic surgery patients
- Evidence of active participation in audit
- Evidence and an understanding of research
- Excellent technical competence/diagnostics skills and judgment required
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of contributing to teaching and learning of others
Skills
Essential criteria
- Communication skills, capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively to others, able to discuss treatment options with patients in a way they can understand
