Job overview
A Trainee Technician is required to join the Medical Engineering Department based at the James Paget Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and committed individual to join a team, whose roll is to maintain and repair a wide range of Medical Equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, and to ensure its correct operation and calibration.
Qualification requirements are NVQ Level 3 / ONC in Engineering or 2 A Levels in Mathematics and a Science based subject. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a practical interest in Electronics and Computing. Some experience in the Electrical / Electronic / Medical Engineering fields is desirable although not essential as further academic / specialist training necessary for the post will be given.
Main duties of the job
To be trained as a member of a small team of skilled Technicians responsible for the Planned Maintenance, Service and Repairs to a wide range of Electro-Medical, Laboratory, Renal and X-Ray Equipment. The post holder will complete a Healthcare Science (HCS) Level 4 apprenticeship in Clinical Engineering and be trained to:
· Carry out planned maintenance, acceptance testing of new equipment, service & repair on Medical Equipment and Devices. Provide a range of advice to Clinical & Managerial staff on purchase & use of Medical Equipment and Devices.
· Undertakes Calibration of Medical and Test Equipment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main Duties and Responsibilities Operational Responsibilities
· To be trained by attendance at external NHS training centres, manufactures and by working with existing Technicians to carry out the duties of a Medical Engineering Technician. Training will be on a modular basis and once competent within a module carry out Planned Maintenance and minor repair work to Equipment under direction of other Technicians.
· Carry out all duties to comply with relevant Technical Documentation. Collect, collate and record all Servicing activities and enter into the Departments Equipment Service Database to ensure accurate records are kept.
· Attend work for external agencies (non NHS) with equipment under Service Level Agreement with the Department.
· Be aware of the risks and hazards to Technicians, Staff and Patients in conducting Medical Equipment maintenance and working within a variety of Wards and Departments. Be aware of their responsibilities in respect of the Health and Safety at Work Act and comply with the Departments Health & Safety Policy.
· Attend In-House, NHS and manufacturers training establishments as required for the purpose of training on new and additional Equipment. Participate in the training of other Staff Members as required.
· Work at other Health Care establishments throughout the Trust as required.
· As Training progresses be expected to participate in higher level and more complex work where this is part of a progression process to appointment as a Medical Engineering Technician.
Undertake any other duties as required by the Medical Engineering Manager.
