Our NNUH Maternity team is looking to recruit an Apprentice working in our busy Maternity Unit.

We welcome applications from individuals wishing to become an Apprentice and gain experience in the NHS.  You will develop new skills and knowledge whilst working with an established team gaining valuable work experience and a recognised apprenticeship qualification.

We are very proud of our Apprentice success rates, with 92% of Apprentices successfully obtaining a substantive post within the Trust at the end of their Apprenticeship contract, and 98% of Apprentices having further plans in place following their Apprenticeship e.g. going on to further education, joining the NNUH staff bank or obtaining employment at another organisation.

Apprenticeship Eligibility Criteria:

All applicants must be:  

  • Aged 16+
  • Resident in the UK/EEA for the last three consecutive years
  • Must not have a qualification in a similar subject at the same level or above
  • Must not be in any form of formal government-funded education upon the start of their apprenticeship

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Good general standard of education
  • 4 GCSE’s at Grade D/3 or above (or equivalent) subject to the job specification
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good IT skills

Full time: 37.5 hours per week

Main duties of the job

As an Apprentice Midwifery Care Assistant, you will work with all members of the multidisciplinary team to contribute to the provision of the highest standards of patient care.  You will be enrolled with a local education provider and will be required to complete your Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship Standard qualification within the duration of the placement.

You will provide care to our patients who are attending for care in the maternity setting. With support from your line manager and the wider Midwifery team, you will complete departmental competency training, to learn the necessary skills for the role – including documentation, patient care, supporting parents with maintaining the baby’s hygiene, cleaning and checking of beds and cots – please see the attached job description for full details. You will play a key role in the care of babies and support of the parents; you will be a valued member of the team in this rewarding specialty where no day is the same!

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To accurately and promptly carry out the instructions of the registered Midwife who is professionally accountable for the delivery of care.
  • To carry out duties as specified within the Trusts Approved core task list for Midwifery Care Assistants.
  • To report to registered staff any patient who gives cause for concern or any observed changes in the patient’s condition.
  • To respond appropriately to clinical emergencies to ensure the patient receives appropriate care.
  • To participate in the admission process under the supervision of registered staff.
  • Provide and deliver a high standard of individualised personal nursing care in accordance with Essence of care standards.
  • To report all care that has been given to patients within the team to a Registered Midwife.
  • To accurately document all care delivered to patients, countersigned by a Registered Midwife maintaining confidentiality at all times.  
  • To assist in the preparation of patients and equipment for treatment, investigations or procedures as directed by the Registered Midwife.
  • To keep the clinical area clean and tidy maintaining a safe environment.
