The Paediatrics Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is gearing up to welcome the next cohort of Newly Qualified Nurses for 2025. We are proud to offer all newly qualified MSc and BSc students joining us a robust preceptorship programme supported by excellent, friendly and experienced Clinical Education teams. As one of the UKs largest teaching hospitals NNUH is well equipped to support our new Nurses as they begin their exciting new career path.

This is your chance to join exciting, innovative clinical services for neonates, children and young people; where you can develop and share your clinical skills and grow a career that directly gives better health, better patient care and improved efficiency within the NHS.  Our paediatric services are expanding rapidly and all our colleagues are able to get involved in planning and rolling out improvements.

Our Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital incorporates Children’s Inpatient, Ambulatory, Emergency, Neonatal and Outpatient care. We treat children and young people across a broad range of specialties including Paediatric Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, spinal, ENT, plastics and much more. We also have a dedicated Surgical and medical HDU. Our collaborative team care for children living in Norfolk and for those accessing specialist treatments from across the Eastern Region.

Main duties of the job

We are a Level 2 Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit and are the recognised regional centre for Cystic Fibrosis Care. We also have the only Tier 3 NICU for the county.  All these department offer huge scope for your professional development. As a Newly Qualified Nurse you will become fully integrated into the team and will be encouraged to continually develop your skills.

We have a dedicated Children’s Emergency department; at the heart of this has been a significant growth in our ability to care for children requiring emergency treatment. We now have a six fold increase in capacity with a dedicated waiting area for children and adolescents, a dedicated resus and enhanced care space, as well as clinical isolation cubicles and provisions to support patients with mental health conditions. 

We are specifically recruiting for our Buxton Ward, which is our dedicated 29-bed children's ward, caring for children aged 0 to 16. It encompasses a broad range of specialities, including paediatric medicine and surgery, orthopaedics, ear, nose, and throat, plastic surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology and oral health. There are dedicated high dependency beds for children requiring this level of care.

Our Practice Development and Education team will be there to support you during your preceptorship period and beyond. We are proud to offer and support all our Newly Qualified Nurses through a comprehensive Preceptorship scheme for a minimum of 12 months.  

When you start with us, you will be assigned an appropriately trained preceptor/mentor, who will support and work with you throughout your preceptorship.

We have a specialised two week supernumerary induction programme which will take place in September 2025 (to be confirmed). This gives you an opportunity to meet the Clinical Educators, get to know the hospital, the NNUH team, attend workshops to facilitate your clinical skills and gives you time in your department. Further to this, there are opportunities to complete a transitional learning needs analysis, access to four bespoke sessions for your continuing professional development (CPD) as part of the Preceptorship Academy and you will have access to the clinical Skills programme with bespoke IV drug administration day for newly qualified nurses.
