Job overview
The Kingfisher Mother and Baby Unit is an 8 bedded unit providing specialist inpatient mental health care for up to 8 women during the perinatal period.
This is an exciting opportunity for a cook to work for us 15 hours per week. We will provide a full induction on recruitment and regular peer support.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidates will be supporting us with providing meals for our service users. This will include meal planning, buying the food, daily preparation, cooking and serving.
There will be a requirement to work flexibly within this role with some weekend work.
You will have autonomy in the development of bespoke menus in collaboration with the clinical team and mothers on the unit. Delivering high quality meals that promote optimum physical health to inpatients, weaning babies, family and staff on request with support of the dietician.
You will liaise with food suppliers, local supermarkets and independent stores to meal plan cost effectively within an allocated budget each week.
You will work directly with the mothers and clinical team to ensure individual dietary requirements and likes are met. You will also deliver health promotion groups focussed on nutrition and culinary skills. Positive previous examples have been smoothie groups or simple quick and nutritious recipe ideas for all of the family.
You will have autonomy to offer creativity to the role.
You will supervise a cook, providing oversight, direction and safe management of the catering facility. Working together you will deliver meals on a shift rotation ensuring meal provision to the MBU over 14 hours per week. Typical working hours are from 10:30 – 18:30 providing lunch and evening meals..

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- City and Guilds Level 2 or working towards NVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent
- Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2 Food Safety Certificate or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Dietetic qualification.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of service delivery within a catering environment.
- Experience in nutrition, cookery, hospitality and catering principles.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a healthcare setting
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to work under pressure
- Ability to provide and receive routine information to inform colleagues and patients, which may include informing on menu changes.
- Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills
- To support and offer advice to staff in relation to food safety standards, service delivery and health and safety issues.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Working knowledge of Food Safety legislation, The Food Act, Food Hygiene Regulations, Food Hygiene Temperatures Control Regulations
- Understanding of Health and Safety issues relating to the kitchen and cleaning, including food safety/COSHH.
- Knowledge of and ability to provide food allergen information
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of NHS/Trust Food Hygiene Codes of Practice.
