Job overview

We are looking for a motivated and experienced Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our healthcare team at Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre (IRC) on a 12-month fixed-term contract - please note the end date for this postition is set as October 2026 -  to provide maternity cover. This is a unique opportunity to work in a secure environment, delivering high-quality medicines management services to a diverse resident population.

As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for the safe and effective administration of medication, supporting both residents and nursing staff with expert advice and guidance. You will play a central role in medicines reconciliation, prescription checking, and stock management, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and national guidelines.

This role requires a proactive and compassionate individual who can work independently and collaboratively, with a strong focus on patient safety, communication, and service improvement.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a daily medicines management service, including administering medication and offering advice on drug-related queries.
  • Support nursing staff with medication queries and prescription checks.
  • Perform medicines reconciliation for new admissions to the centre.
  • Manage medication stock, including checking, ordering, and removing unwanted items in line with policy.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date resident medication records using electronic systems.
  • Offer advice to residents on medication compliance, minor ailments, and prescribed treatments.
  • Plan and conduct medicines management checks for in-possession medication.
  • Assist in the procurement of medicines and medical supplies, preparing daily orders based on usage and stock levels.
  • Promote adherence to a local formulary aligned with BNF and NICE guidelines, suggesting alternatives where appropriate.
