Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and committed Paediatrician, with an interest in Paediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology for 12 months fixed term appointment to cover a colleague's sabbaticalApplicants with other complementary special interests will also be considered where these align with our service needs.  

The post has clinical responsibilities covering services to children within the Acute Trust in conjunction with the other Consultants working as a team providing elective and emergency children’s acute service for children of North Northamptonshire. 

Main duties of the job

The Consultants operate a Paediatric consultant of the week rota for the Children’s wards. There is a separate PAU consultant of the week Monday to Friday 9AM to 5.30 PM. The  

The Paediatric consultant of the week is responsible for all in-patient paediatric admissions during the week and for all paediatric emergencies during regular working hours. The out of hours on call is shared amongst consultant colleagues. Attendance at morning and evening handover is expected. Clinics are cancelled during the Duty Paediatrician week to provide full ward / emergency cover. 

 All paediatric and neonatal consultants partake in a shared rota covering the paediatric assessment unit 0900-1730hrs; 5 days/ wk.  

The newly appointed consultant will join the team of existing consultants to deliver a high-quality emergency and elective paediatric service.  

There is scope to have dedicated time in the job plan, to enhance and further develop the sub-speciality service delivery alongside the transformation programme. The Group model helps to enhance collaborative working as a county wide approach to speciality services with increased opportunity with a larger case mix, opportunities for research and enhancing excellence in paediatric care in Northants.  Participation with consultant colleagues in clinical governance arrangements for the NICU, general paediatrics, safeguarding and areas of special interest to develop practice and buttress existing frameworks is essential.

Children and Young People Services are part of the Family health Division, led by a Chief of Division, a Divisional Director and Head of Nursing. Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, are each led by a Clinical Director.

The Paediatric ward relocated in May 2013 into the purpose built ‘Foundation Wing’ housing the new paediatric Skylark Ward and paediatric assessment unit.  The Paediatric Assessment Unit has been successful in reducing short term acute admissions to the children’s wards. It is now co located alongside the inpatient facility. In addition, two high dependency beds were established, and further cohesion achieved by the close proximity to ITU and theatres.

Our LNU cares for babies over 27 weeks’ gestation with 16 bedded LNU with 2 intensive care cots 6 high dependency and 8 special care cots.  The unit is well supported by and engages actively with the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network and participates in The National Neonatal Audit Project. 

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

TIMETABLE 

The following is for informational purposes.  

Ward rounds-Monday to Friday commencing 0900 hours during Duty week. 

Handover times 0900 hours to 0930 hours in NICU; Evening handover 1700 hours to 1730 hours. LNU consultant is expected to attend both handover ward rounds.  

Precise arrangements for shared weeks to be finalised following discussion with consultant colleague/s. 

PAU week: 9-5 .30pm ; /yr 

Duty Paediatric shift5.2 /yr -  

On calls - 1 in 10; % supplement  

(Subject to change; Clinic timetables and time of sessions and time off may vary; additional late evening cover may be required over the winter period, with compensatory time off in the mornings) 

Other activities, for example the vetting of outpatient referrals (RAS) may be included, at the first job plan review 

Other activities:  

Outpatient clinics – ~2 – 3 clinics/wk 

Admin ~1-1.25 

SPA 1.5 

DCC = 8.5    SPA =  1.5 

ONCALL 

Weekend on call Paediatric consultant takes over from Friday 1.30 pm, continuing over the weekend, till Monday 9 am. The consultant is onsite, undertakes ward rounds, providing resident support from 9-5pm on Saturday/ Sunday and non-resident outside of these times, available for emergencies. During the working week, the on-call consultant is resident till 10 pm and non-resident till the following morning(0900hrs), available for emergencies. 

On-call paediatric consultant attends handover and undertakes the ward rounds when on-call, Weekend on-calls are split with one consultant covering Friday and Sunday and is then Duty Paediatrician for the following week. A second consultant is on call for the Saturday. During on-calls on-site presence will be from 1700 to 2200 hrs with on-call from home till 0900. Consultant of the week is on call from 0900 till 1800 with additional hour (1700-1800) for handovers and urgent reviews. The consultant is expected to do ward rounds on Saturday and Sunday mornings and provide onsite cover from 0900 to 1700 hours. 

TEACHING / RESEARCH & AUDIT  

The Trust recognises the importance of continuing medical education and the budget funded by the Trust is held by the Medical Director. 

Excellent, teaching and education and library services are provided with an active Postgraduate Medical Centre.  A new purpose-built Library and Education Centre with a Clinical Skills Laboratory is available to further enhance the teaching facilities. 

Protected teaching is provided on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes.  A regular teaching programme including induction for junior doctors is in operation.   

Final year medical students are allocated to the Department from Leicester University for their training – all consultants share in the programme. 

Regular supervision and workplace-based assessments for junior doctors are in place, and the successful consultant would share in these duties. 

Research and audit are supported by an active Quality Governance Unit. The department actively supports research and has been part of numerous neonatal and Paediatric multi centred studies over the years. 

MENTORING 

Mentoring is available for all new consultant staff; this is designed to help and assist new appointees to settle into working at Kettering General Hospital as easily as possible.  It is designed to assist individuals in a personal way to familiarise them with the Trust and how things work in practice. 

GOVERNANCE 

The Department holds monthly Paediatric directorate and Consultant meetings; monthly CYP Governance meetings and regular departmental M&M meetings and 'lessons learned ' forums. We also have a weekly M&M presentation at the end of the Friday grand round.  

We have a robust system for incident reporting; all consultants are expected to investigate Datix incidents and complaints where appropriate. We have a weekly MDT Datix club; monthly risk meetings, scrutiny meetings and doctors/nurses ward meetings that feed into the monthly Governance meetings. 

Person specification

Education, training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with GMC and Licence to Practice
  • Specialist Interest & experience in UK Paediatric Diabetes SPIN/ Endocrinology
  • Current certification APLS and NLS
  • Level 3 safeguarding training in date
  • At least 6 months tertiary neonatal experience at middle grade level
Desirable criteria
  • Management experience
  • MRCPCH or equivalent CCT in paediatrics (or within 6 months of interview) or equivalent

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Effective participation in clinical audit
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training at an appropriate level
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist interest to complement those of other consultants in the department especially if no suitable candidate for the above special interest
