NHS AfC: Band 4

We are East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS), an organisation focused on delivering a high standard of emergency and urgent care to our patients across the region.

The East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EMAS) provides Emergency, Urgent and Non-Emergency pre-hospital care and transport across six counties (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire & Rutland and Northamptonshire).

Job overview

Post Title: Student Ambulance Technician (FREC Development Pathway)

Band: Agenda for Change 75% of the top of Band 4 (training rate) until sign off and then Band 4 until successful completion of all components of the Newly Qualified Technician (NQT) consolidation of practice portfolio and progression to experienced/independent Clinician status in line with the Trust’s Newly Qualified Technician (NQT) Policy.

Unsocial hours: Section 2 Agenda for Change unsocial hours payment

East Midlands Ambulance NHS Trust (EMAS) are pleased to advertise the Student Technician Pathway (FREC Pathway) to encourage motivated and committed people into our service. EMAS recognise that not all people who seek a career in the ambulance service may have all of the academic qualifications to gain immediate admission onto a Technician programme. EMAS have worked to create a dedicated Student Technician pathway that will enable individuals to commence employment whilst working towards strengthening both English/Maths qualifications as well as achieving a regulated clinical qualification.

We are recruiting into all of our operational divisions (regions) across the East Midlands.

Main duties of the job

The Student Ambulance Technician (FREC Pathway) is unique in its design. During development you will complete:

  • The First Response Emergency Care Qualifications at Levels 3, 4 and 5 (Qualsafe Awards)
  • EMAS specific development
  • English & Maths development within the pathway
  • Circa 14 weeks operational development at a support level grade before qualifying (equivalent to Emergency Care Assistant)
  • Emergency Driving competencies
  • Circa 20 weeks experiential learning as a Student Technician.

The duration of the pathway is a minimum of 61 weeks before being eligible for Newly Qualified Technician status (subject to all assessments being passed). The post is therefore subject to a probation period for the duration of development (61 weeks).

Upon qualifying as a Technician, you will undertake a 12-month period of consolidation in line with the Trust’s Newly Qualified Technician (NQT) Policy.

Working for our organisation

NQTs who have completed all components of the NQT consolidation of practice portfolio and deemed capable in Technician practice will progress to experienced/independent clinician status. At this point, the Technician may work with any grade of staff and will be expected to work independently and act as a clinical lead in the absence of a Paramedic/Registrant and will receive remuneration in line with Agenda for Change Band 5 pay scales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Successful candidates will join our Student Technician Candidate Pool, to be allocated to a series of Student Technician courses that we will be running throughout the year until March 2025.

About You

Firstly, you must be committed to providing excellent emergency and urgent care for patients of the East Midlands. You must also commit to upholding our Trust values of respect, integrity, compassion, teamwork and contribution. You will have experience in work roles that are ‘people facing’ and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will be able to demonstrate a commitment to personal development and have a realistic understanding of the ambulance service.

You must be occupationally fit to undertake the role of a Student Technician. You must hold a full UK manual driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points for excess speed and must have at least a provisional C1 category at point of application.

Additionally, you must hold the following:

Essential:

  • Three GCSEs at Grade 3 (current grading) or above (previous grading of Grade D or above)
  • Evidence of applied numeracy and literacy skills in everyday situations
  • C1 driving entitlement (provisional C1 will be accepted at point of application)
  • Aged 18 or above

Additional Information

  • ‘Sound’ applied English & Maths skills. In your supporting information, please detail how you use English and Maths on an everyday basis. You will be required to undertake numeracy/literacy development on the pathway. You will be supported to acquire level 2 (English and Maths Skills) by the end of the development if not already held.

The Student Technician Pathway (Widening Participation) will require you to engage in a range of learning, including but not limited to taught and assessed sessions, self-directed learning, online learning, portfolio development and experiential learning in practice.

EMAS will always ask you for proof of qualifications as detailed on your application form. This also includes proof of the provisional/full C1 entitlement on your driving licence. Therefore, please consider this before submitting your application and please ensure this is available for us to view upon request. If you do not hold evidence of your qualifications, you can request a certified statement of results via the following link: https://www.gov.uk/replacement-exam-certificate.

If you hold international, non-uk qualifications you will also need to supply a certified statement of comparability alongside these. Please contact ENIC (www.enic.org.uk) for further guidance and information.

Additionally, all posts are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Barring (DBS) check and Occupational Health Assessment.

We welcome applications from internal departments such as Corporate Services, EOC and NEPTS.

Our recruitment and education teams are working hard to develop internal progression opportunities for existing A&E employees within East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust. We will be able to share further details on these specific internal A&E pathways as soon as they are confirmed.
