Applicants are invited for a substantive Consultant with a responsibility in Infectious Disease, OPAT and Microbiology at Nottingham University Hospitals. The post encompasses both Queens Medical Centre and the City Campus of Nottingham University Hospital.

Full-time Consultant with a responsibility in Infectious Disease, OPAT and Microbiology for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is split with 7 PAs (DCC+SPA) in Infectious Diseases, OPAT and 3 PAs (DCC+SPA) in Microbiology.

This is a full-time Consultant post designed to support the provision of a high quality infection management service in Nottingham, augmenting the existing Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases services and contributing to antimicrobial stewardship through the appropriate diagnosis and management of infection.  The Microbiology Laboratory is based at the QMC Campus however clinical duties will be required at both QMC Campus and the City Hospital Campus. Infectious Diseases is based at City Campus

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the provision of a comprehensive Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases service, including laboratory duties, results authorisation and interpretation, clinical and antibiotic advice, patient consults, ward rounds and MDTs, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, clinical governance, teaching and training, and research.

A full range of Infectious Disease and Microbiology emergency and elective patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care.
Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency Infectious Disease and Microbiology service.

All applicants must have accreditation in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology on the GMC’s specialist register, or be within 6 months of their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) date on the interview day.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register
  • CCT in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology expected within 6 months of interview date
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Desirable criteria
  • Higher professional degree e.g. MSc / MD / PhD

Practical requirments

Essential criteria
  • Ability to travel between City Hospital Campus and Queen’s Medical Centre campus

Clinical skills/Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidenced technical and clinical skills as described in the job description
  • Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
  • Experience in delivering high-quality presentations

Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to present coherent examples of service development/delivery.
  • Able to work effectively in a team.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in managing change in service delivery of a clinical and/or diagnostic microbiology service
  • Evidence of leadership in quality improvement / clinical audit / clinical governance

Personal skills/qualities

Essential criteria
  • Able to work flexibly in a changing health service
  • Able to use the Trust’s IT support systems

Teaching, audit & research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit and /or Quality Improvement
  • Demonstrates experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching
Desirable criteria
  • A good record of original research publications / peer-reviewed publications
