Job overview

This is an exciting development opportunity to pursue a career in Clinical Coding at the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  In return we will provide comprehensive training to enable you to gain a good knowledge of medical conditions, become proficient in the application of National Clinical Coding Standards and Conventions and within 3 years attain a nationally recognised qualification and accreditation.

You should have proven ability to prioritise, plan and organise work daily, remain calm under pressure and work proactively within our team. Good communication, analytical and judgemental skills, attention to detail and an enthusiastic approach to work are also essential.

The post will require operational working across all Trust sites. 

The department supports flexible working.

If you are shortlisted you will be invited to join a Virtual Clinical Coding Awareness Session to provide you with information about the role, the department, career pathways, training and development and how the clinically coded data is used by  the Trust and the wider Healthcare Network.  Following the Awareness Session if you are still interested in a career in clinical coding, you will be selected for interview and asked to complete a Coding Assessment on the day.

Main duties of the job

Clinically coded data is fundamental in helping the Trust deliver against its overall goal of becoming the ‘safest Trust in England, outstanding in all that we do’.  The income of the Trust is reliant on accurate and timely coded data.  This information is also used for resource management, clinical research, clinical audit, and healthcare contracting, and service provision both locally and nationally.

The Trust has a reputation for consistently achieving targets and for high quality clinical coded data, which is achieved by providing excellent standards of training, mentoring and support for all team members.

At this Trust we have introduced an excellent career pathway for Trainee Clinical Coding Officers. On successful attainment of a proficiency certificate after the first year, you will progress to a Band 3 Clinical Coding Officer for a further 2 years until you have passed the National Clinical Coding Examination to become a Band 4 Accredited Clinical Coding Officer.  One year later when you have acquired more clinical coding experience you will progress to a Band 5 Clinical Coding Advanced Practitioner supporting and mentoring Trainees and liaising with clinicians to improve the quality of the coded data.

Qualifications/Training

  • GCSE to grade C or above (or equivalent) in English Language
  • GCSE to grade C or above (or equivalent) in Mathematics
  • GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in a Science
  • Computer literate, including experience of using email and Microsoft Word and ExceL
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL or equivalent IT qualification
  • GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in Human Biology or Biology
