Decontamination Technician

Job overview

The post-holder will effectively manage the Endoscopy decontamination area.  They will work as part of the team as directed by the Endoscopy Sister.  They are expected to plan and organise their own workload within the decontamination area to ensure safe preparation of endoscopes for the lists and other clinical areas within the hospital.

To participate in the on-going development of the Endoscopy Service.

Endoscopy has 3 Units one at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Mexborough Montagu Hospital. 

The service provides 7 day working and staff rotate to all sites

Main duties of the job

Undertake the necessary training and assessments to fulfil the role.

 Understand COSHH and its importance in the decontamination area. 

Will be able to use the RapidAER machines efficiently in a user and administrative capacity.

Will be able to use the storage cabinets efficiently in a user and administrative capacity. 

Will have basic knowledge of the workings of the RO plant room and will be able to recognise any faults or alarms that require attention. Will be able to recognise any fault with any piece of equipment and report it to the appropriate service.   

 Will be able to undertake weekly water testing and swabbing procedures correctly and competently, and act upon these results accordingly. Will be able to undertake all daily and weekly checks and complete the correct documentation, and act upon these results accordingly.

Will be able to complete endoscope management tasks, including filing, endoscope inventory, endoscope repairs, loan endoscopes, ensuring all information is kept in orderly and accessible systems. 

Will be able to manage stock levels for products used in the decontamination area and alert the appropriate staff member should stock levels be low or require ordering.  

 Daily and weekly cleaning tasks of all areas are to be completed and documented. 

It is your personal responsibility to maintain your accreditation in the decontamination area and to seek further training should you require it.

Experience/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic understanding of Endoscopic procedures
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills
  • Good IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in a medical device decontamination setting/sterile services department
  • GCSE English and Maths- minimum acceptable grade C or 4
  • Key Skills English and Maths- minimum level 2
  • Decontamination/Sterile services training qualifications
  • Quality system auditing experience
