Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to join our Doncaster Place based Infection Prevention & Control Team.  This is a post working across organisational boundaries to achieve our ambition of reducing avoidable infections as a system within the borough of Doncaster, putting the patient at the centre of all that do.  You will be required to work as part of the team facilitating the prevention, surveillance, investigation and control of infection within the Acute Trust and across community services within the borough of Doncaster. 

The successful candidate will be expected to have sound demonstrable IPC knowledge and skills and the ability and drive to empower and facilitate effective infection control practice.   If you self-motivated with a kind and compassionate approach then this post is for you. 

The role will include overseeing the day to day running of the Infection Prevention and Control team, being involved in  staff education, promoting good infection control standards, audits and feedback of results,  responding to outbreaks and Quality Improvement initiatives.  

Main duties of the job

As an Infection Prevention and Control Lead Nurse you will provide advanced specialist Infection Prevention support and guidance for staff delivering  clinical and strategic infection prevention programme and delivering IPC services across the Acute Trust and community social care services.  You will be equipped to support the training and development of systems to improve the quality of IPC management, by the delivery of national directives, to develop local quality, patient safety and safe systems of working for staff.  You will work with the Trust Antimicrobial lead and the Lead Antimicrobial Pharmacist in driving forward Antimicrobial Stewardship best practice.

The post holder will be required occasionally to travel as a requirement for this role across Doncaster and Bassetlaw  Teaching Hospitals sites as well as Care homes, extra care facilities, domiciliary care and specialist healthcare placements across the  Doncaster Borough to meet the needs of the service.  

The Lead Nurse will lead the IPC team, conducting Appraisals, managing sickness absence and managing the day to day running of the team.  They will deputise for the Nurse Consultant/Deputy DIPC when required.

  • Evidence of highly specialised expert knowledge of infection prevention and control obtained by formal infection prevention and control education, under pinned by work-based experience.
  • Application of theory to practice.
  • Evidence of broad experience of working at a senior level within infection prevention and control
  • Evidence of effective management of change in complex organisations
  • Evidence of effective management of resources/budgets
  • Evidence of professional leadership and management across disciplines and organisation boundaries

Qualifications and Training

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC
  • Infection Prevention and Control qualification
  • Educated to degree level

  • Holds a Masters Degree or working towards

  • Uses specialist knowledge to clarify and explain relevant microbiological results with implications for infection prevention and control to healthcare professionals, contracted / support services, residents / patients and visitors as required.

  • Have a UK driving license and access to a vehicle to travel independently between all Trust sites and community facilities covered by the IPC service
