Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Ward Sister / Charge Nurse to join our dynamic friendly surgical nursing team on Surgical Assessment Ward for 12 months maternity leave cover.  

We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to join our well established nursing team with a commitment to delivering high quality individualised patient centred care.

The roles will provide the successful applicant to demonstrate a level of clinical leadership and enhance their management skills.

Evidence of at least 2 years post registration experience at a senior staff nurse level within a surgical environment is essential. The successful applicants will also possess the relevant knowledge and skills in managing, teaching and supervising junior members of staff.

Main duties of the job

Main duties will include the assessment, planning, implementation and ongoing individualised holistic care for our patients.

The ward delivers a high standard of clinical care, with seven day senior nurse coverage to promote safe and effective care for our patients. This area will equip nurses with an abundance of skills in high quality essential nursing care, specialist skills and also managing & prioritising workload.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Registered nurse in an acute environment
  • Scope roles/competencies relevant to speciality
  • Experience at senior staff nurse level and evidence of ward / department management experience
  • Demonstration of knowledge and skills in speciality
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of research based practice
  • Able to work across all surgical specialities
  • Evidence of involvement in audit
  • Evidence of personal development i.e. Link nurse role, area of special interest

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • RGN with current NMC registration
  • Up-to-date knowledge of professional issues
  • Demonstrate professional post-registration development
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent experience or qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in management development courses
  • Other advanced clinical skills i.e. venepuncture, cannulation, catheterisation, ECG

  • Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills with multi-disciplinary team/client/relatives
  • Demonstrate a caring manner with an understanding disposition
