We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 8a Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) committed to delivering high quality care to join our elective orthopaedic service at Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre.  Please contact us to come and have a look round and meet the team already providing a quality service to the people of South Yorkshire. 

There is joint partnership working between Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BH) and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT) in a dedicated elective orthopaedic hub, with health professionals undertaking hip and knee replacement inpatient procedures alongside foot and ankle, hand and wrist, and shoulder day case surgery.

The Montagu Elective Orthopaedic Centre (MEOC) facility has two state-of-the-art theatre units, two anaesthetic rooms and a recovery suite, in addition to 12 inpatient beds.

Main duties of the job

To be part of our team the successful candidate will be an autonomous practitioner ensuring that your practice is underpinned by the four pillars of advanced clinical practice, have recent experience of caring for patients in an acute setting, have excellent leadership and clinical skills, as well as evidence of continuing professional development, have drive, ambition, passion, a flexible approach and dedicated to working in this modern, high quality environment supporting best practice for orthopaedic patients following GIRFT recommendations.

As an experienced ACP, you will provide high quality clinical care for patients presenting with a variety of orthopaedic elective surgeries, providing a comprehensive advanced clinical assessment, requesting and interpreting investigations, decision making, provision of treatment, prescribing, evaluation of care and referral to other healthcare professionals if required.  The ACP will be the lead for the rapid response team for Mexborough Montagu Hospital. Whilst working autonomously the ACP will always work within a multi professional team led by a Consultant.

On appointment the successful candidate will be allocated a clinical and educational supervisor, access to eportfolio and will be supported to complete any educational or clinical training for their on-going CPD.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience at senior level (AFC Band 7 or equivalent), working as an autonomous practitioner on own initiative.
  • Evidence of high quality, comprehensive, clinical assessment, treatment and decision making skills
  • Current evidence recent contribution to audit, research or service development programs.
  • Effective leadership, influencing and supervisory skills including supervision of junior staff / students and ability to coach / motivate others.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of awareness of local and national issues affecting advanced practice.
  • Evidence of recent Quality Improvement and Innovation project.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree level Registered Nurse with valid Nursing & Midwifery Council registration or relevant AHP
  • Working towards completion of Master’s degree in Advanced Practice
  • Completed Advanced Physical Assessment and consultation skills, Managing medical conditions/managing the acutely unwell and X-Ray interpretation
  • Registered Independent Non-Medical Prescriber
  • Relevant teaching / mentor qualification
  • ALS provider
Desirable criteria
  • MSc in advanced professional Practice
  • PG Cert/Diploma in advanced professional practice
  • Management or leadership qualification

Personal Attributes & Skills

Essential criteria
  • In depth knowledge of the role of the Advanced Clinical Practitioner
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to communicate with patients, the public and all grades of multi-disciplinary staff and outside agencies in a professional manner
  • Patient focused and able to communicate complex, sensitive, or contentious information to individuals or groups and manage conflicting opinions
  • Good time management and prioritisation skills to enable concentration and working under high pressure in an unpredictable environment. Manages own workload and supports nursing and junior medical staff
  • Analytical and judgement skills in carrying out patient assessments and ability to make a diagnosis based on imaging and pathology results as well as being able to critique own practice
  • Excellent emergency patient assessment and treatment knowledge and skills in relation to invasive and none invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to point of care ultrasound, ECG, catheterisation, venepuncture, cannulation, ABG and IV drug administration, including teaching and ongoing workplace based assessment of others in these skills
  • Ability to critically appraise research to identify and implement best practice. Able to design / support audit programmes relevant to advanced practice in emergency care.
