Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee, together with Consultant colleagues, will be responsible for providing a urological, neonatal and paediatric surgical service for Sheffield and South Yorkshire.

The urology work covers the spectrum of standard UK paediatric urology except exstrophy and renal transplantation and dialysis (provided in Manchester and Nottingham). There is an established stones / PCNL service which accepts referrals from around the country including Northern Ireland. Two radiologists have an interest in interventional radiology and support this service.

There is a comprehensive radiological and nuclear medicine service and full video urodynamic facilities. The Unit has 4 urology nurse specialists who run a comprehensive continence service including non-invasive bladder studies, biofeedback and PTNS. There are multidisciplinary clinics caring for spina bifida, DSD and related patients, and established transition clinics with an adult surgeon and specialist nurse to ensure smooth transition to adult services. There are regular MDT’s with a nephrologist and radiologists to review Nephrourological cases. There is a well-established monthly joint Nephrourology clinic.

The urology consultants have clinics in Sheffield and share clinics in outlying peripheral district hospitals to provide urology cover throughout the region.

They will take an equal share with general paediatric surgical consultants in providing emergency cover. This is currently as a ‘’Surgeon of the week’’ providing daytime emergency cover for the CEPOD theatre (currently 1/8 non-resident on call emergency rota with prospective cover).  During this week elective clinical commitments are suspended.  The surgeon of the week will have no timetabled elective activity during their on-call week. The oncall commitment covers all aspects of paediatric general and neonatal surgery. Candidates unconfident in general on call willbe provided with heavy mentorship for the on call.  The future of the general on call is currently in discussion.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the whole range of supporting professional activities which run in keeping with the regional rolling programme. This will cover Clinical Governance, audit and like activities. The appointee will have the opportunity to lead within one or two of these fields. In addition, teaching will be part of their activities. It is expected that the university will grant the post holder the title of Honorary Clinical lecturer.

The Trust allocates equivalent of 10 days per year of study leave averaged over the first 3 years.  Funding up to £800 per year is provided.   The Trust has a HR policy for specific other leave needs.  The successful applicant will be offered an Appraiser and an electronic (MEDSU) appraisal package is utilised with yearly appraisal and 5 yearly revalidation. Job plan meetings are undertaken yearly.
