Job overview

The SHSC NHS Electrician plays a vital role in maintaining and ensuring the safety of electrical systems within the Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC). The role involves the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of electrical systems to support the smooth operation of healthcare services, ensuring the safety and functionality of all electrical infrastructure across SHSC facilities.

Main duties of the job

  1. Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Systems:

    • Install, maintain, and upgrade electrical systems, including lighting, power supplies, and emergency backup systems, across SHSC NHS facilities.
    • Ensure all electrical systems are operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with relevant standards.
  2. Electrical Testing and Inspection:

    • Conduct regular testing and inspections of electrical installations to ensure compliance with IET Wiring Regulations and NHS safety standards.
    • Carry out Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) and other routine checks to ensure all electrical equipment is safe for use.
  3. Fault Diagnosis and Repair:

    • Quickly respond to electrical faults and breakdowns, diagnosing and repairing issues in various settings, including patient care areas, offices, and communal spaces.
    • Troubleshoot electrical systems to minimize downtime and disruption to healthcare services.
  4. Emergency Response:

    • Provide immediate response to electrical emergencies, such as power failures or electrical hazards, to ensure continuity of essential healthcare services.
    • Be part of the on-call service to address urgent electrical issues outside of regular working hours.

These duties ensure that SHSC NHS facilities maintain a safe and reliable electrical infrastructure, critical to supporting healthcare operations and the safety of patients and staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Installation and Maintenance:

    • Install, maintain, and upgrade electrical systems within SHSC facilities, ensuring compliance with NHS standards and local regulations.
    • Work on a variety of electrical systems including lighting, emergency systems, power supplies, and medical equipment infrastructure.
  • Testing and Inspection:

    • Conduct regular inspections and testing of electrical installations to ensure compliance with the IET Wiring Regulations (17th Edition) and other relevant standards.
    • Perform PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) and other safety checks, ensuring all electrical systems and equipment are safe for use in healthcare settings.
  • Repairs and Fault Diagnosis:

    • Respond to electrical faults and breakdowns, diagnosing and repairing issues promptly to minimize disruption to services.
    • Troubleshoot electrical faults in a variety of settings, including patient care areas, administrative offices, and common spaces.
  • Compliance and Documentation:

    • Maintain accurate records of all electrical inspections, tests, repairs, and installations for regulatory and auditing purposes.
    • Ensure adherence to health and safety regulations, including risk assessments and safe working practices, particularly in critical areas such as operating theatres and patient care rooms.
  • Emergency Response:

    • Provide emergency electrical support as part of the on-call service to address urgent issues such as power failures, lighting malfunctions, or electrical safety hazards.
    • Be available for immediate response to electrical emergencies in SHSC facilities, ensuring minimal disruption to patient care.
  • Collaborative Work:

    • Work closely with other maintenance teams and healthcare staff to ensure electrical systems are compatible with healthcare services and meet the needs of patients, staff, and visitors.
    • Provide advice and guidance on electrical safety and best practices to other NHS personnel.
  • Project Support:

    • Assist in the planning and execution of electrical works related to refurbishments, upgrades, or new installations within SHSC facilities.
    • Ensure that electrical installations are completed to the highest standards, minimizing any disruption to the day-to-day running of healthcare services.
