Job overview

Clinical Fellow in Geriatric Medicine – ST1/2 Level

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Geriatric Medicine department as a Clinical Fellow working at ST1/2 Level.

A number of posts are available, for either 8 or 12 months’ duration. Some of these posts have no on call commitment, and, recognising the preference of previous clinical fellows to take part in an on call rota which attracts out of hours payments, some of the posts include an on call contribution.  We aim to align the requirements of specific posts to individuals’ preferences and this will be discussed further at interview.

There is opportunity to contribute to the delivery of our undergraduate teaching programme and whist we expect some engagement with this from all successful candidates, the level of involvement can be tailored to individuals’ development needs and interests.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

The post holder will work closely with colleagues to provide safe and holistic patient care.

Teaching Duties

All post holders will be expected to contribute to teaching and educational activities within the department.  It is anticipated the majority of the educational activities delivered will be on the ward (at the bedside) rather than in non-clinical classroom formats. However, there are a number of Geriatric medicine classroom-based teaching days across the year to which we would also encourage post holders with appropriate aptitude for teaching to contribute. We also have other trainee healthcare professionals in the department (trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners for example) and opportunities to organise and deliver bespoke teaching activities for these groups may arise.

Working for our organisation

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of local hospital and community services for people in Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from further afield, including cancer, spinal cord injuries, renal and cardiothoracic services. In addition to community health services, the Trust comprises five of Yorkshire’s best known teaching hospitals.

  • The Royal Hallamshire Hospital
  • The Northern General Hospital
  • Charles Clifford Dental Hospital
  • Weston Park Cancer Hospital
  • Jessop Wing Maternity Hospital

The Trust has a history of high quality care, clinical excellence and innovation in medical research. We are proud to be in the top 20% of NHS Trusts for patient satisfaction and, following its inspection in 2018, the Care Quality Commission has given the Trust an overall rating of ‘Good’ with many areas and services highlighted as ‘Outstanding.’
