Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacy Assistant to join our team. The post will be based in our Pharmacy Department at Bassetlaw Hospital which is fully automated.

Pharmacy experience is desirable for this post but not essential as full training is given. The successful candidate must undertake Level 2 qualification in Pharmacy Services

Candidates are required to have GCSE qualifications in Science, English language and Maths at Grade C or above regardless of experience (certificates must be provided at interview).

Applications from candidates who possess the Level 2 qualification or equivalent are also eligible to apply for this post (certificates must be provided at interview).

Applications from candidates with non-UK equivalent qualifications must also posses a Statement of Comparability. This must also be provided at interview.

Candidates must also have good numeric, literacy and keyboard skills.

The post involves manual handling and use of a pallet truck so candidates will need to be physically fit.

Additionally, the hours for the post are 9am to 5:30pm on a Monday to Friday. There will also be a requirement for the participation in the weekend and bank holiday rotas.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include:

  • The dispensing and issuing of medicines for inpatients, outpatients and discharges using the 'Robotic' dispensing machine; which stores picks and labels stock for dispensing;
  • Aseptic preparation of medicines, including TPN for adults and neonates;
  • The supply of stock medicines to the wards and departments at Bassetlaw Hospital and Retford Hospital;
  • Topping up of stock medicines at ward / department level;
  • To release orders from the automated Pharmacy robot and to assist in the loading of the robot;
  • Cover for the storekeeping with duties including receiving goods from the Pharmaceutical wholesalers and suppliers, performing checks and entering them onto the Pharmacy computer system ready for use;
  • Stock taking of medicines;
  • The over labelling of medicines;
  • Undertaking routine environmental monitoring;
  • Participation in the weekend and bank holiday rotas;
  • Cover at DRI Pharmacy as necessary

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • 3 GCSEs including science, English language and maths at grade C or above; or equivalent qualification/relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • BTEC level 2 Pharmaceutical Science and/or NVQ level 2 Pharmacy Service Skills; or equivalent qualification
  • 5 GCSEs with 2 science GCSE all at grade C or above; or equivalent qualification
  • EDCL

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable ability to study to NVQ 2 level
Desirable criteria
  • Hospital or community pharmacy experience

Personal Attributes & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Be able to undertake manipulation of syringes and devices for aseptic dispensing
  • Ability to work methodically, accurately and with speed while under pressure
  • Possess tact & diplomacy where appropriate
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff & colleagues

  • Desire to work for the NHS
